Debt Advice - Help needed !

I have previously been in quite bad debt however over the last 5 years I have found my feet and I'm now earning some good money and trying to lead a debt free life. I now have credit cards, a bank loan and I'm paying everything back as I should with no defaults and pleased my credit rating must be increasing. However as a result of trying to be honest and I am finding that old debts are haunting me. I am receiveing threatening letters from debts that are over 5 years old and I don't think I've been in touch. They are threatening to visit my house and i feel the same pressure I felt previously. Can they demand repayment after this long or is it cowboys trying their luck? I don't want them to come to my home as I now have a young family and would be extremely embarrassed. One of the debts is to Student loans? Are they different to any other debt? The other is to barclays. I though I may be in a position to get a mortgage soon and now I'm worried these will stop me getting one. Any advice would be really helpful.

As far as I know student loans (issued after 1998) are not covered by the statute barred limitation, the other debt might be if it is more than 6 years (5 if you're in Scotland) since you wrote to them about it or made a payment. If you believe this is the case you need to send the statute barred letter.
  • You need to keep SL informed of your position so they can collect payments through the tax system (PAYE). If you are earning less than the threshold, let them know, then they'll back off.
