Weird q: dog hairs and washing machine

I want to wash my dog's bedding/blankets, but every time I do them in the washing machine, for the next 2-3 washes everything else that gets washed comes out covered in his hair!

He's got short blonde hair and it just seems to stick to clothes like needles.

I know this is a bit of a weird one, but anyone have any bright ideas about how I can use my machine to clean them but avoid this problem? I can handwash them, but they take longer to dry 'cos I can't spin them like the machine and they never smell quite as clean :o

Thank you!

Would it work if you put them inside an old duvet cover? I think it's going to be difficult if you want to get the hairs off the bedding but not into the washer.

Go over the blankets with either a rubber bristled brush or with your hands wearing damp rubber gloves. That'll bring lots of the hair off then wash them inside a pillowcase and it should contain the rest.

What a good idea! Why didn't I think of that!

I have the same problem with the fleecy blankets for my cat. Don't wash them obsessively, but when I do I notice the hairs hang around. A good shake outside before and after washing and into a duvet cover will be good enough for me.
    Thanks :A
  • Ditto, thanks guys! Will get as many hairs off as I can then shove them inside a duvet cover.

OS always has the answer :D

I have the same problem with both dog and horse hair, washing the dogs bedding and the horses rugs/numnahs do tend to leave hair everywhere. I used to use an old duvet cover but upgraded to a "Horsewear" wash bag, which I got from Derbyhouse but I know you can get them off ebay. The problem with sticking things in a duvet cover is that the hair can still get out of the holes between the button's poppers etc, however these bags are zipped so nothing but dirty water gets out and all the hair sticks to the inside of the bag which you just brush out of later on.

Id never thought of that either. I usually just run the washer empty after Ive done the dogs blankets.
  • Just treated myself to a horsewear bag. Not very OS I know, but IT'S PINK! ...and it'll save me money in the long run, because my machine will last longer...?! :rotfl:

I'll just tie the top of the duvet cover into a big knot! :D

I wipe out the machine with kitchen roll, especially round the seals, then run the machine on empty when I've washed the animal bedding. This works really well.

This is what I do too - and I have 9 large hairy dogs to wash bedding for :o.
