  • Whatever happened to the *it's the thought that counts*

If you want to do something, I think a small hamper with maybe a few treats that your mum would not buy for herself. (bargain ones of course).

Do not call stuff "home made" - call it "hand made!" Tesco do some posh looking glass jars - fill these with dried fruit and top up with wine - or Lidl olive oil with chillies or garlic or herbs in it - or home made bath scrub etc.

If you do not say you made it yourself but refer to "traditional craft fair!" vaguely - they will think you have spent a lot,

It is all in the perception.

Like this idea, you're absolutely right it's all about someone's perception.

My DPs family are the same, as my children are the only children in the family they buy for them and expect extravagant gifts in return. Where as me and my sister know money doesn't grow on trees and just buy for each others children.

I bought one thing back in August but also got a few things in Tescos today, no half price toys unfortunately but the £1 things are great stocking fillers. A game my son wanted which was down to £5.97 now and a CD player for the little one which was £11.47 (iirc) and a Batman safety set for my nephew which was half price who is Batman mad so that was ideal.
One day I might be more organised...........
