Joint Bank Account

Hi All
I would just like to know about joint bank accounts.
I am going BR next month after years of stuggling with unsecured debts.
I have a full time job and so does my partner. We currently pay our rent direct to the housing company who own the house but we were looking to set up a joint bank account.
She has an excellent credit score with no debt. If we set up an account would my Bankrupty and poor credit score affect her file at all?
thanks all

Yes. You would create a financial link/association, meaning that your bankruptcy could show up on a lender's search of her credit file.

So DON'T open any joint accounts.

Hi I am just starting with my BR, I have joint account with my wife already, will this be closed down along with any account I already have?

Also one of the debts I will be including is council tax, which is in both our names, can the bailiffs, still chase my wife for the debt?

Yes the bank will close it and come after her for any OD owed. She can pay the OD off and take your name off the account so it is hers. Or pay off the OD and then open a new account.

Yes, the council can come after her for the full council tax owed.

Have you taken any advise yet from one of the debt charities yet?

Hi tigerfeet, thanks for the info.

one other thing my wife is not working, has no savings, is in the UK on a spouse visa, I am her sole supporter. Any benefits are claimed jointly but my wife does not have entitlement to claim alone. I was wondering if my Bankruptcy would affect her status, we have a 9 month old daughter born here in the UK as well.

Spoke to many debt charities and CAB, been advised BR was my best option.

A joint debt will always fall to the not BR partner if it was in joint names.

Have you spoken to your local Welfare Rights Officers? (if there is still any in your area) as they would be able to fing the answer on that one.....they work very closely with CAB usually.

Where would I find my Welfare Rights Officers?

It may be advisable to get your name removed off the account....if this is possible or else the account will be frozen & you will have to open a new one.

You could open a joint Coop/Barclays basic account to operate after your BR....the OR is only interested in anything before the BR date.

    Hope that helps.

Contact your local council....alternatively the local CAB will have contact details.

In my area the WRO have open days at the local GP surgery but thats just Derbyshire I think.
