Security and practicality. The printer that prints cheques is housed more securely than the general laser printers / output handling equipment. So merging the print streams isn't a practical proposition as it's high cost.

As this is a new PAYE system - I suspect they're working instead to link with the SA system which issues most repayments via BACS. The main issue with PAYE is that there's a much greater customer base - and (with no Return to make) a greater difficulty obtaining customer Bank account details.

Fair enough but it wouldn't have killed them to add 1 line on the letter saying "cheque to follow"

I agree ........... but they actually do it in 4 lines!

At the side of the 'Repayment due' on the P800T .... it references Note 16 on the P800 Notes (Understanding your Tax Calculation).

Note 16 reads : "Tax overpaid - if you get a P800 Tax Calculation for more than one year and the calculation for the latest tax year shows that a repayment is due we will send one cheque which will cover all the years we have reviewed. You should receive this within 14 working days of the date of the P800 Tax Calculation"

I actually had my cheque 2 days before the calculations.

Note 17 .......... covers Repayment Supplement ........... "this is the interest we pay you when you have overpaid tax and we delay your repayment. For the year to 5 April 2010 you will be entitled to interest if we do not repay you until 1 February 2011 or later"

I read that section but discounted it due to the bolded section as my P800 was for 1 year not more than 1

The full stop makes a difference! ;)

But - I would concede the 2nd sentence could better be tweaked to make it clear it applies to both scenarios.

  • I've just recieved one of these letters, some of the documentation is missing so i'm not 100% sure that i'm right.... but mine says:-

    Tax chargable - 785.20
    Tax overpaid - 626.20
Plus Repayment Supplement (where approprite) 2.24
    Repayment due 628.44

does this mean that I'm getting a 628.44 rebate?

    [fingers crossed]

Depends. If 'repayment supplement' is quoted then that's for the year 08-09.

Is the £628.44 figure carried forward to an 09-10 P800 which was also enclosed (as both years were reconciled at the same time)? As the calculation there could increase / diminish the 08-09 overpayment.
