Lump in breast

Hi all, can some one help me please?
I've had an achey breast for about a week, didn't think much of it, it started to hurt the same day my period started. Well Sunday I found a lump - not hard but soft like a bump, at the side, not quite my armpit but just round the side of the breast.
I've seen the doc who thought it was a cyst, was very painfiul when she prodded it. Luckily my work does Private Healthcare - which I object to on principle but am a hypocrite so have taken advantage of it. I have an appt for Tuesday pm - am completly terrified.
I know that 9/10 lumps are not cancer, but 1/10 is still scary odds and I'm frightened.
Can someone please reassure me?
Thanks

I had a large painful lump a few years ago and it was just a cyst and they drained it , I expect yours will be the same. Nothing will stop you worrying about it, but I expect your doctor would not have given an opinion if he was in much doubt .0

I had a cyst thirty years ago, reassured by my doctor that it was nothing more and confirmed by the hospital. I was pregnant at the time and had to wait about six month to have it removed. Quickly and easily no after problems and a small faint scar.
A young girl (family relation 20 years old) has just found a lump and been told by the hospital that is a cyst, she will be having it removed shortly.
If it is painful it is most likely to be a cyst, I can't say don't worry because you will until you have more confirmation but try not to your GP will know and most breast lumps do turn out to be cyst.

Thanks all, I know if it was a friend who had the problem I would say all the sensible things, but its hard when its happening to you.
I want the world to stop and not bother me with work/trivial matters until all this is sorted. I know thats not going to happen.
Thanks0 -
If it is any help the fact that it is painful is a good sign - or so the consultant said when I saw one a few years ago for a similar thing. Malignant breast lumps are apparently often painless which is why they may not be found until quite sizeable.
Good luck - although I was told my own lump was definitely benign I opted to have it removed as I managed to worry myself sick over it despite the reassurances.0 -
Thanks, I have read that about painful ones probably being OK.

Sounds like a fibroadenoma. I've got several of the blighters... and they can be very painful.
I'd check you're wearing the right size bra, because that can aggravate a lump and make it painful.
Otherwise, if it's painful and started with your cycle then I'd try not to worry. Most cysts/fibroadenoma are non cancerous and just a massive cause for worry with no real reason. (also a cancerous lump would be acting independently from the hormonal changes in your body at a certain time of the month)
As long as you've had a doctor check it out and they've given the all clear then don't stress. If you can, push for either a scan and biopsy or a mamogram, depending on your age.
I've had various scans and biposies over the years now, and it's worth it for peace of mind.MFW 2010- £112,500 + 20% Equity Loan = £150,000 35 years

I honestly don't think anything anyone says will stop you worrying, it's a very natural reaction. Try to relax as much as you can over the weekend and just take things easy. Best wishes..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
i went through all of this about a month ago - i am awaiting my second appointment after an all clear - the dr did say, that as mine was hard, and did not hurt he was more concerned about it - that and the shape, ended up with ultrasounds and a mamogram, which with chest hair was fun !!! still they couldn't tell me so i had to go in for a biopsy - and wait a very long week for results - luckily it was an all clear !!! but I have to go back and go through it all again in a couple of more weeks to check nothing has changed.
in short its not pleasant, but I think from what you have explained it sounds like they are being cautious !
hope it all goes ok for you, i just kept on thinking either way there was nothing i could do about it, and would deal with it, if it was the worse case scenario, when it happened0 -
Hi! I had something similar to this. It was sore, but for a while I thought it was something like my bra digging in. I found a lump near to my armpit, and went to the dr's who thought it may be a cyst. I had antibiotics which cleared it up, but I've had it a couple of times since. They think now it was an infected hair follicle, and I'm prone to getting it every now and then. The dr said to me that because it was a painful lump, it was a good sign.0
