Options
Sorry to show my ignorance but bought some scampi, I haven't bought this for years.....anyway, 5 years a go I had a severe reaction to Prawns and have never touched them since...
On the packet it says contains shellfish and have to say , inside the batter it did look like prawn so I didn't have any...
I always thought it was fish....???

Scampi are a kind of large prawn. They are also known as Dublin Bay prawns. If you have had a serious allergic reaction to prawns don't eat scampi ;)

Thanks for that, glad I didn't have any...
I was almost 8 months pregnant at the time and 20 mins after eating a prawn sandwich I was bright red from head to toe, ithching and swollen all over and in full blown labour, my daughter had to be born by emergency ceasarean and I was injected with adrenaline, it was horrendous...I was just glad I as 8 months pregnant and not earlier!!....daughter was fine 5lb 8oz...tiny
I'd eaten prawns all my life without a problem...strange. Although a couple of months ago I had a reaction to eating avocado...hope it's not the start of any more allergies.
  • Back in the mists of time when scampi in a basket was a posh thing to have on a night out, there was a big scandal in Fleetwood (near where I grew up) when it was discovered that many restaurants were serving chopped up monkfish tails as scampi! They used to have to throw monkfish away at the dockside because it was so ugly nobody would buy it, and this was somebody's bright idea to make money out of what was then considered rubbish fish. How times change... So maybe that's where you got the idea that scampi was fish?
Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes.

 OMG anaphylactic shock and labour at the same time ! My dd has to carry adrenaline as she has an allergy to peanuts and pinenuts - never had to use it though. Did your allergic reaction affect your daughter -did she have a reaction too ?

Actually now I think about it I had an allergic reaction whilst my ds1 was being delivered by c-section, that was to pennicillin.
  • Quite often monk tails are sold as scampi too!

EDIT:(sorry hadn't seen the last post, I was away from my pc for an hour and thought I'd add my tuppence without refreshing the thread!)

When I was little (in the 70's) my Dad used to bring home a huge bag of mock scampi, which was actually chopped monkfish tails - he used to get it for next to nothing from his friend who was a fishmonger. We loved it - the bag he used to bring in would probably cost about £50 today!!

My daughter took one look at the scampi last night and didn't want to try it but had she I would have monitored closely, just in case....as far as i know she isn't allergic to them but you never know , as one of my sons in allergic, lips swell to peanuts and the pair of them have asthma....my other 4 kids are fine.
My doctors reaction when asking advice was to avoid prawns, which is obvious...but whilst on half board in Spain this year, just as I was to tuck into a dish, i would spy a prawn...it's frightening...
I least I know the warning signs...
  • See here, the post at the bottom is a wonderful explanation of what scampi is!! :D

Ohhhhh I love Scampi. Can't touch it with a 10 mile barge pole though at the moment. A large plate of scampi and chips in on my list of dishes to eat once bean finally puts in an appearance.....only 6-8 weeks to go. But it'll all be worth it......for my plate of scamp.
