NHS dentist and cosmetic dentistry

Hi, I wonder if someone could advise me, I am currently under the care of a nice NHS dentist that has done a good job at making my teeth healthier and 'fit for purpose', however I would like to do a bit more ie implant, new crowns, white amalgams etc..
Might sound like a silly question, but if I was to go to a private practitioner for a sort of 'smile makover' would I upset my current dentist and would he carry on providing the basic work I might need in the future under the nhs?
Thanks

Have you asked your NHS dental surgery if they also do private work ? Mine do and I got my cosmetic work done by the same dentist who did my NHS treatment, I was just billed separately.

I think all the dentists round my way do this, so fingers crossed for you, it makes life a lot simpler.

  • Thanks for your reply Erics Mum, I don't think my dentist does private work, I asked before and I don't think I had a straight answer, sort of we can think about that later. I am a bit confused!

Same with me. I mix and match NHS and Private treatment with the same dentist. My mouth is healthy but have a lot of large "vintage" fillings at the back that are gradually requiring attention.

In the past couple of years I've had an NHS white crown and also a NHS metal crown (out of sight )on an upper back tooth. I've paid privately for another white crown and an implant, which I was lucky enough to get at half-price as a "training patient" for my own dentist.

Ask for a recommendation. I do not take on the "cosmetic" type of work ... not because I am "NHS" (there is a big misunderstanding about terms within the general public that I will not get in to here) .... but because I dont want to do it. You have to manage high levels of expectations. I am happy taking on what is needed but if I feel that is isnt "needed" then I have an EXCELLENT guy I refer to for this sort of thing. I am sure you own dentist has a go to guy so just ask them about it. It helps to explain what you would like to achieve so the dentist can best advise. For example some people think "straight white teeth" is best achieved with veneers when in reality this is highly destructive and whitening and orthodontics would probably get a better result.
