Ferry charges for van to GB

Had some work in England so needed to take a small van, myself and a passenger. We had the goods we were installing plus our steps, tools etc. We were classed as commercial both ways even though we only had tools on the way back so cost was £522 return with DFDS Belfast - Birkenhead.

Anyone any ideas or tips for saving some money on future trips? DFDS are advertising car plus driver for £79 single!

Spoke to Stena, P&O and Seatruck and all classed us as commercial.

  • if you are a member of the farmers union, you can book a lot cheaper through a travel company in Belfast called Travel Solutions. I booked it for P and O, Larne/Cairnryan out Tuesday morning. Van, driver and one passanger £ 101.00. that is out only, will book again for weekend but not sure of date yet. it is for all P and O sailings as far as i know. hope this is useful

  • Try a quote with Nutt Travel in coleraine. search google as i cant post up link as i'm a new member. You have to request a quote but they get back to you quickly,

I go to a car show each year and use the birkenhead route. It may be the most expensive peice of water in europe but it's also the handyest if your traveling south.

    Hope this helps.

You might be able to save a few bob if you book the ferry and accomodation all in one.

We were going to work in a hotel so only needed travel.
I tried every option to get the price down but apparently if you're carrying tools home (even after installing the equipment we initially carried over) then it's law that you are "Fit for work" and so must travel as freight ... MADNESS given that it was a Kangoo van amongst lots of 40 footers
