Working in a bookmakers

DS1 hates his present job, but is lacking in the motivation to find something else, because he just doesn't know what he wants to do.
His dad has suggested combining his flair for maths with his love of watching sport, by going and working in a bookmaker.
I've no idea - do bookmakers have reasonable career paths? Is it a "good" job to have?
I can see him enjoying it just for the watching sport element, if nothing else

If he is good at Maths I suggest computing or accountancy.0

Is your son academic? If he can get a degree in maths he would have lots of career options as maths graduates seem to be in very short supply. Just working in a bookies shop is more of a customer service job - the prices, returns and betting limits are on screen so you dont have much to compute really - helping customers if they ask perhaps. The career path as I see it would be store member > team leader > store manager. The odds are all set at head office by the trading teams. The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0

(imo) very clicky companies to work in, one wrong move or your face doesnt "fit" n watch your back as you could be landed in heavy water with no backup from other staff and ended up shafted, long hours as well, lunch breaks non existent (have to nip out for 5mins to local shop when quiet)0

Many departments you can work in, shops isn't too good to be honest, other posts are correct in that its a retail environment. I personally work in broadcasting for Galacoral, and to fit in you have to have good knowledge of most sports, and of betting.

working in a bookies is basically a dead end job,
perhaps he should look at training to be a croupier, crap money to start but when experienced he could get work on cruise ships etcI

Thanks for the replies. A bit disappointing, but at least he's not going to build his hopes up too high.
Thank you for the link meebsquat and for the idea hartcjhart - will look into those.
Or - back to the drawing board!
He would never work in an office, so a career in accountancy is a definite no-no, but thank you for the idea.0
