Both S/Employed and in need of a job!!

Ok, well after a lot of hear renching, i think our numbers are up in regard to running our own business, theres just not enough coming in to cover the business bills and household- the shop we rent eats up most of the profits each month and things are just getting worse so im looking for a loadsa advice and supprt from my friends on here!

Ive checked the shop Lease and one bit of good news is that we can give one months notice when we are ready to shut shop and hopefully the stock we have left will pay off any debts from the shop.

  • both go temporary until you find your ideal job,
i did this last year and you get a weekly income, which as i was self emp. prev i appreciated.
i was lucky to get a job the day i rang the agency on just over £8ph
which helped me out of a sticky patch

Im glad youve come to this decision, it has seemed for a while that the shops not been working for you guys :grouphug:

With all the varied experience that you both have of running your own business your CVs will be great, if you need any help, I can look over your CVs if you want- you can just email them to me if you think that will help?

Otherwise theres some good stuff on https://www.i-resign.com

And of course the jobseeking board.

if I remember rightly didnt you used to be a secretary? Im sure your skills will be "live" still, and there must be loads of demand for a woman who can manage all the stuff that you have had on your plate over the last 6 months- if I was hiring Id snap you up ;)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind

Good luck to you. I came out of my shop in March - and was it a relief. The landlords almost doubled my rent, and were talking of a ten year lease!!! Someone had taken the shop next to ours under those terms, I think they thought that as they were paying £11,000 a year on the lease that's what they would be paying in ten years time. Fools, rents are reviewed every 3 years, and the landlords can do what they like.

Good luck dotty! There seem to be quite a lot of us dfws looking for jobs at the mo... you'll get lots of good advice and support I'm sure. Temporary work is usually quite good whilst you're looking for something longer term - it can be repetitive and dull but at least its a fixed wage with (often) few responsabilities... in the past I have done temp work through an agency in an office (putting papers in alphabetical order!), royal mail sorting office and cleaning in a leisure club... not my ideal jobs put manageable for a coupe of weeks each! Lynz is right... you must have lots of valuable transferable skills that you can put to good use - an employer will be lucky to have you :D

    Hi Dottyanne,

I was (am?) in the same situation, am still in the process of closing my business - although it's only contract termination with my suppliers. I 'shut shop' about a month ago after twoo disastrous years and HMRC decision to push ahead with BR claim:mad:
    I thought that Ihad really two things against me, when looking for a job;
    1. My age - 56 - despite the new 'legislation' people will always prefer to take on someone with longer term career prospects. I can understand this - I would probably have done the same if the roles were reversed.
    2. Once you have been Self-Employed, running a business, paople tend to view what they consider to be your 'failure' with suspicion. After all - you have been 'on the other side' and you 'know' the tricks.
However, I have, today, spent a couple of hours at the 'JobCentre Plus', as they are now called, and I found the people there to be extremely helpful and friendly.
They are not trying to push me into any old job, thankfully, although they do confirm that I will, given my circumstances, probably have to widen my horizons and probably drop my expectations.
I can do most of my initial job searching on line https://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk and they will pay travel expenses for attending interviews that are a long way from home.
I think that they appreciate, also, that my priority is genuinely to find a job as, with my impending bankruptcy, I need to get back on the earning ladder very quickly.
They were also very good at pointing me towards available benefits such as council tax rebate.
Jobseeker's allowance isn't much (£57 per week) but since the last time I had cash was back in May - even this gives me a little bit of independance, and I am no longer fully reliant on my wife who, for the last two years, has been the main breadwinner.
I am setting myself a target to find decent employment within a month.

    Good luck to you:beer:

Hi Dotty Anne, Where are you based (other than in a house!), Could be some of us need work doing that you two may be able to assist with. In my case it would only be money for tasks that I might have to employ others for... with the community here it could be there is something out here to help you bridge the gap 'til you get regular employment!? Weren't you selling computer parts on ebay too? Couldn't you keep the online side going while you look for work as you wouldn't need to pay for premises or have you both decided to give up the computer business totally?

Good luck with job hunting, as has been said above, I'm sure with secretarial skills you'll soon find something. Your oh should be able to find work in computer upgrades and repairs have a look on jobserve.com (Sorry if I'm confusing you with another poster)
