Europa Hotel 'free' newapapers

I attended a lunchtime function in the Europa Hotel last week and as I was leaving I noticed a stand close to the door with tourist information and some local newspapers. A woman who had also been at the function lifted a newspaper and walked off with it so I thought they must be free and also picked one up.

As I approached the door I was accosted by a snooty doorman demanding that I pay for the paper. I was so embarassed and said why weren't the papers at the reception desk if they were for sale, or if not why wasn't there a notice indicating that they were not to be taken? Needless to say I got no sensible answer.

Has anyone else been caught out there?
