sky warranty

i just had a phone call from sky to ask if i wanted to extend my warrenty? i have only had it for just over 3 months !! and was shocked to be told that 90 days was all that was offered!!

i was not told anything about there only being a 90 day warrenty but i never asked!!

5 pounds a months or 50 pounds seems a lot of money to make sure something that belongs to them is still working!!!!

what to do? ( as the remote has already gone wrong but was in no rush as was unaware of the limited warrenty!!)

  • Im pretty sure that Sky have to repair you Sky box if it breaks down within 12 months.

If your equipment breaks down after 12 months just phone sky up and cancel you subscription they normally will give you a free repair/ replacement if you stay.
  • is there anyplace to check that?

as i don't want a warrenty but also don't want to pay to have the remote replaced!!!
  • The standard Sky warranty is definitely 12 months. This is probably a 3rd party company trying it on...

Our Sky box had 12 months warranty. Was this a brand new Sky box or have you had your Sky box replaced? If you have the Sky repair men out they will try to repair it, but if they cannot they will give you a new (reconditioned) box - cost is £65 I think, whether it's repaired or replaced. These boxes only have 3 months warranty.

    You do own it.

The Sky box is yours when you buy it, you arent 'renting' it, like at NTL. Whoever told you that, ts_aly, is wrong.

You have a Sky warranty on your box for your initial 12 months, which covers you for free breakdown repairs and free engineer visits to get the box repaired.

However, if you are out of your warranty and you get an engineer visit (for £65) you will then have a warranty for 3 months as a breakdown recovery cover. After 3 months you are then out of warranty again.

If you have your box replaced/repaired 1 day before your warranty ends, you will have 3 months of warranty added on.

However, if you ever need an engineer or your box has broken down, then just call and say you want to cancel your entire Sky service, they will pass you to a department known as 'Turnaround' and you will be given a free engineer visit to repair/replace the box in order to keep you as a customer.

I used to work for Sky, hence my knowledge of how this works.

I did the cancelling thing just two weeks ago because my box kept freezing. I told them i wanted to cancell because it would be cheaper to get a freeview box than to pay them £65 and they sent me an engineer for free. There is no need at all to pay for their repair plan.
  • thanks for all the info.

the box was new 3 months ago!!

will phone sky about the remote and see what they say!!! if they say it is not under warrentuy then i will know !!!

the bloke is phoneing me again tomorrow!! so may have few words to say!!!!

    thanks again

hi. my friend used to work for a company that was actually exposed on a watchdog style programme of selling warrenties or new boxes (that were actually old boxes) for extortionate prices. it was really dodgy, they used to take the money out in one payment off the credit card, then take the monthly payments also. it also sold this to people in areas that they had didn't have engineers - like Northern ireland!! surprisingly, this company is actually still running - albeit under a different name. they even said they were calling from sky when they cold called. VERY DODGY. I have had them phone me before. There are probably loads of these type companies around. Be very careful, and as always, dont give your card details over the phone to anyone.

I quite often get letters from these companies trying to sell you an extended warranty for the sky box. All I can say is what a rip off, they are between 50 and 110 pounds a year depending on the company (almost all are made to look like they are from sky themselves). Just throw them in the recycling. As others have said, you are under skys own guarantee for the 1st 12 months. After that if it goes wrong ,say you will cancel with sky for a free call out.
