  • Still called guising Peem and still done in the traditional way, every caller is expected to do their "party piece" before getting a sweetie and some nuts although occasionally my daughter was given money by neighbours who had no sweets ready.

Dooking is compulsory and no using a fork :)

    And treacle scones.

  • I'm so glad that someone explained the 'party piece' thing being a Scottish thing, I'm a Scottish lass myself and felt last year that the local kids were a bit rude for not trying to 'earn' their treat. I asked my husband about it but he just moaned that the whole trick or treating thing isn't traditional at all.

I'm a pagan so I enjoy the season myself but it should be more about fun than 'what can you get?' I mean, when I was young we just went guising at friends homes, and I felt really uncomfortable when my teenage friends took me out guising to stranger's houses one year.

I've got pet rats and thought about appearing with a couple on my shoulder at the door, but probably best to choose between that OR hm treats rather than frightening the life out of them with the thought that my rodents had a whisker in my cooking.

  • My children don't go trick or treating in here - only in the US! We are usually far too busy for them to do it anyway - we go to all the Halloween celebrations everywhere - Bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally I wouldn't like to eat homemade stuff - no reflection on anyone at all, I just can't eat anything homemade and I'm fussy about where I eat out as well! Must be fun living with me!!!!!!!!!
    Happy Halloween!!!

Have decided to buy some stuff. Have images of being sued over biscuits or something equally as mad! What is the world coming too.

    Thanks for all the replies.

How on earth do I say to the parent of the other child that I do not want my daughter to do that without sounding like a spoil sport ?

i agree with you i will only let my kids trick or treat my famley and freinds i will not let my kids ask stranges for sweets fun or no fun just tell the mum you dont want your child doing it as it teaches them the wrong thing and gose back on everything we teach our children dont talk to stangers its not being a spoil sport its beening responable
i cant slow down i wont be waiting for you i cant stop now because im dancing
  • Who's idea was this hm halloween treats thing? Last year had no trick or treaters but thought id make a few cakes just in case - after all we can always eat em ourselves.

  • Last year OH & I ended up hiding with the lights off on Halloween night
as we didn't have anything in and didn't want to be egged or bog rolled!

Was very moneysaving but not particularly community spirited so i'd like
to try and have some treats ready this year... old style of course!

    Any suggestions?

I've seen a recipe for pumpkin brownies that looked very haloweeny - but was on an american site and i'm not sure you can get the vital ingredient of pureed pumpkin tinned stuff in the UK! oh well
