Cost of fruit and veg.

I presume that this has been posted before but it makes me so outraged that I'm going to post it again, anyway!
Our local Somerfields (and, I preusme all other SMs) RIP OFF their customers (IMHO) with their pre-packed veg! For example... Leeks (loose) say 89p/lb; pre-packed something like £1.90/lb
Whenever I am in there and see elderly people picking up a pack of the pre-pack I point this out to them. Without exception they are (a) surprised and (b) angry.
Why do SMs do this? (OK OK... I know why) I believe it is immoral.

All supermarkets do this. It seems reasonable to me though, they have to pass the cost of the package on. I never buy any fruit and veg pre-packed because of the cost, and the waste involved in throwing away the packaging.0

To blanch vegetables you just parboil them. I can't tell you exactly how long for - it depends on the vegetable, but just cook them till they're half done. Then you can put them in the freezer. I prefer to free-flow them before putting them in a bag, but then we have quite a large freezer, and I know other people prefer to just put them in a bag and smush them a couple of times.

can I ask why would you parboil veg and then freezedoes it keep for longer in the freezer or is it for cooking convenience?

Vegetables contain enzymes which make them lose flavour and colour and sometimes make them tough, even at freezer temperatures. Therefore enzymes must be stopped by being heated for a few minutes. This blanching is necessary for all vegetables to get the best taste from them when defrosted.:T
It is best to plunge the par boiled vegetables into cold water as soon as you take them off the heat to cool them as fast as possible. Do not leave the veg in water longer than needed.

All Fruit & Veg on 1/2 price promotion at my local Lidl again this month, I don't know if it's nationwide though - check the website for your local store.

Sainsburys Chillis are £10/kg more expensive if you buy them pre packaged!
I've finally realised even the "Value" pre packaged fruit and veg is often more expensive than the loose stuff. My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.
