When do accounts get closed?

I went bankrupt on 15th June (wow! four months ago!) and I've heard nothing from Santander. I opened a current account with them just before I went bankrupt and I didn't owe them any money at all. The debit card that went with the account went to the OR and I've not used the account since then but it's not been closed. Could I ask them for a new debit card and start using the account? When will I hear from them?

Because the receiver now controls all accounts included in bankruptcy I very very much doubt they'll allow you to keep the santander account

this has happened in the past & in the end the account is always eventually closed...took barclays 9 mnths to close my account

The only type of bank account [normally] allowed to someone who is BR is a basic-type account.....

in other words, an account with which it is not possible to acquire unauthorised credit.

so, it must not have a cheque book, or over-draught facility.

Often folk have bank account products, and believe them to be of the basic sort....they then find the accounts inexplicably closed or suspended.....largely because of a perception as to what qualifies as a basic account.

BR's learn to think a little differently.

If you currently have no such account, I recommend a Co-op Cashminder account.

These accounts offer full internet banking facilities, plus a Visa [Electron] bank card....which has but few drawbacks.

Plus, account access at Post Offices?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......
  • I'm curious on this too, I'd like to get my pre-br basic acct back if possible (or closed so I can get a new acct opened) but not sure when/how to go about it cos there's a couple of quid in it!

I assume that it's the banks that choose to close the accounts (after info from the OR)?
so do I just wait it out until discharge - then ask the OR for it back if its not been closed?

  • I went BR in April and are still waiting for Santander to close a joint account I have got. It did have £200 credit in it. This has now gone due to monthly charges and a direct debit for a computer program renewal I forgot about canceling the DD. It also still has £1500 od available.
Santander and the OR have still not replied to my emails or letters about it apart from one email from Santander to say they will look into it and let me know the outcome.
