Hunt for things to put in charity christmas shoeboxes

For an older boy - hat or cap, pens and pencils, paper, balls, soap and flannel, badges, sweets and a card. Maybe a yo-yo or a pack of cards would be ok, what do you think?

The other thing is what size of shoe box is the right size. Or I am I being obtuse?

A good point!
The site states a 'medium' sized box. I have always taken this to mean a standard adults shoe box - but not the larger one that boots come in - and not a child's shoe box either as you simply can't fit the stuff in. Actually, half the fun is finding small enough things and making it all fit in!
Pop into Clarks or another shoe shop and ask for a couple of boxes - they always seem to have plenty to spare and are used to giving them out for this cause.0 -

Just looked on my leaflet at home and it states a medium box's measurements as 12" x 7" with a depth of 5". Seem to remember last year I would get there abouts with for example 11" x 6" with a depth of 6" - I never seemed to get it exactly. It also mentions that if a box is too big it could be split.
This is the link to the Samaritan's Purse website which has lots of info.

Just looked at wesite, kids are really up for this. Both came down with 7 shoeboxes between them, looks as though its going to be a busy time in our house. Both boys (12/13) keen to make boxes for boys of their age group. They have routed around house and found
2 packets of 10 gel pens bought last week in Tescos,
2 tubes if unopened toothpaste,BBD May 07
4 bars of unopened soap,
6 Baseball caps
2 packets of Jellybeans BBD Aug 2007
50 rubbers and pencils from the recent love to read promotion.
Packet of top trump cards duplicated never got around to taking them back.
3 packets of promotional playing cards, screwfix keep sending them to O/h
2 pocket kites.
4 red/yellow card and whistle referees sets, Who knows why?
9 Tennis balls still in the packets.
However what they really want to put in are those cheapy polastyrene planes you get at most christmas fetes. They have just told me the hours of pleasure that they got from them.
ANY ONE GOT ANY IDEAS WHERE I CAN GET THEM FROM

From home bargains I got plastic tubes with 3 (I think) little tubs of play doh and cutters in them. I have also put in some musical instruments that my children no longer use - bells etc. For the sweets the co-op have bags of lollies and the swizzels mixture (drumsticks, lovehearts etc) on bogof.0

Forgot I also got mini toy tool kits in Tesco Warrington 25p on 3 for 2 and magic gloves from Instore for 70p0

All sounds wonderful, and I was very interested in participating until I did some research. Read the page and make of it what you will.

well i have to say they categorically say no religious items and the site quoted above is also a religious one, both organisations have religious ideology behind them and believe their view is correct, all i can say is i am doing this for the child my box reaches and hopefully it will bring some joy to them let others get on with the politics of religion
