hi can someone please give me some advice?

hi all sorry if this is in wrong place :o

my Mum has just reached 60 and is entitled to claim a pension, however she has deferred it and intends to keep working.

All good except due to some mix up the tax office think she is claiming it and have sent a new tax code to her work place her previous code was 647L and the new one is 140L she has phone them and its sorted however it was too late to stop her been taxed on this code for this months pay:eek::eek:

can anyone tell me how much she is likely to pay on £1137 before tax using code 140L or what percentage she will pay in tax on this code??? She is really worried she wont have enough pay left and just wants to know roughly what to expect

any help appreciated :T:Tthanks in advance

the tax office have said she will recieve any overpayments back in the following months pat

Dont know the figures but she will pay the normal amount of tax that she pays now plus 20% of what would be her pension.

If pension is say £100 she will pay an extra £20.

But it should be given back to her in her next pay packet.

1,137.00 gross will give her 860.38 net on tax code 140L compared to 944.88 on tax code 647L.

whilst the above two posts may well be correct they don't answer your question

if she has her tax code changed from 647L to 140L with effect from her October poay then she will owe £714 in tax for the month of October as she will be perceived as owing back tax for then last six months (i.e. april through september) as well as the extra £84 for October

No because HMRC should have issued the 140L code on a non-cumulative basis and so when her employer operates it they will only take the extra tax due from October and not from April to October inclusive.

  • My dad died in June and mum's tax codes have been changed and we do not understand them.

With her own works pension and state pension she has been given the tax code 250Y but told she owes them £441 as the code wasn't changed when dad died in June.

She gets another smalll pension from dad's railway pension and got a letter the same day saying she is on BR code for that.

Does that sound in order to anyone here.

I am sorry if I have not posted this correctly

    Thank you

You would have been better with a separate thread? It will get lost at the tail end of this one.

The 'BR' sounds correct. But the 'owes them £441' from June sounds to be from an upgrade of State Pension following your Dad's death? So I can't say 'it sounds right / wrong' as the pension value up to / after June can sit in a wide range.

Some gross pay figures on 'works pension' / 'State pension' (up to June and from June) / railway pension would help. Also the Code number prior the change ........ and the deduction (+ reason) on the P2 giving the Code as 250Y.
