Self assessment newbie

Hello,

I became self-employed in May of this year and registered online in June, inputting the June date on the online form by mistake. I've just realised my mistake and want to change the date to May. Will the tax office be able to change this date and will I be in trouble for making a mistake?
Also, am I right in thinking that my self-assessment deadline for 2010-2011 will be due in either October 2011 or January 2012? Sorry for asking such basic questions but the process is daunting!

Don't phone the tax office, speak to the National Insurance Class 2 helpline and tellthemthe correct date you started so they can update their record and advise you what class 2 NI is outstanding. The tax aspect of it can be dealt with when you fill in your 2010/11 tax return, it will ask you for the date you started.

Telephone number for the class 2 helpline is 08459154655

  • You wont be in any trouble for having the incorrect start date !

You will however have a tiny bit extra national insurance to pay.

My Husband began self employment recently and we filled in the paper form to register him .I completed the form and just asked him to sign it . It was only a few weeks later that i realised i had put the incorrect start date on the form - i was 2 weeks out..... i just wrote a letter to HMRC explaining the date mix up and within a few weeks i had a giro slip to take to the bank to pay the 2 weeks national insurance we owed .

    No hassle at all.
