    get the biggest you can...but you can add more drives later if required.....

    320gb is massive - even with big pic files of 1mb

    No, don't get the biggest you can, because (as shown) that won't be the best value, and you will lose the most data if it fails. Always keep at least two copies of your data - you may prefer to get two smaller external drives if your computer doesn't have enough internal storage. You don't need 400GB to store photos.
