Oh flipflops!!! I've killed Windows Update!

It's nearly 5 am and I've been faffing about with this since 10pm last night  I was notified of a new Windows Update today but I couldn't get it to work. Went to the Windows Update site but the site stalls at the 'checking for latest updates for your computer'. The green bars keep floating across but nothing else happens.... I went to Program Files and was a bit surprised to see the Windows Update folder was greyed out, (well, yellowed out actually!), and the folder was empty. The only unusual things I have done recently are to uninstall Nokia P C Suite and re-install it, (what a pain!) and install and run Registry Mechanic.
Help please

Have you tried a System Restore to a point before you made the changes?
Also go to here and try the newer Microsoft Update instead.

Hi and thanks for replying...yes I have given System Restore a whirl, it was the first thing I thought of, but it didn't help! I meant Microsoft Update...sorry, can't get used to calling it that. Your link took me to the same place I was going and the same thing happens...I sit here willing those green bars to spring into life and gimme some updates!!!
Any other ideas please?

There's been problems with Windows Update today - it's at their end. Give it a few hours and try again. No longer visiting these forums.0
