gym membership prices

Hi, I'm not sure if i'm in the right place but can anyone give me an idea of how much i would expect to pay for
1. Gym membership for myself or
2. gym membership for a family of 4.
I would really like to join one but have no idea on what price i would expect to pay. Thanks in advance for your help

It really does depend on what you are looking for, where and (to a lesser degree) when you intend to use the gym, as there may be off-peak rates. I wouldn't expect much in the way of a family discount though.

When I lived in Manchester city centre, I joined the small gym in the basement of a nearby hotel. It was very small - one cross-trainer, two running machines, a couple of weight machines and some freeweights. It also had a very small pool - I think 20 metres - and a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. For this, I paid (I think) £16 per month each.

When I moved to North London, I joined LA Fitness that was a few minutes walk from my front door. It was much bigger, over two floors had a pool. I don't remember it having sauna/steam room but it did do classes such as Body Combat, body pump etc. This cost £40 or 45 per month, for a 12 month contract.

Then I moved to South East London, and joined a Virgin Active gym on the Strand. It was way more expensive, but I thought (at the time) that it was worth it. Firstly, I knew that if I had to travel home first then I would never go back out to the gym. The gym itself is huge (and more importantly, clean), with pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, Power Plates, classes, Yoga room. The rate was £80 per month, including towel hire, for a rolling 1 month contract, and allowed me to use almost any other Virgin gym in the country (except the premium gyms in Canary Wharf and such like, which I believe are £100+). However, I no longer keep up the gym as I tend to find that it became an excuse for eating more - "Oh yes, it's fine to have this doughnut because I'm going to the gym tonight!".
  • If you're looking to go to the gym with your family, you could try looking around at local (modern) primary/secondary schools. A new primary school was built in my town last year with very modern facilities and only charge £1 a time to use them (weights, treadmills, exercise bike, cross trainer etc. etc.). The only problem is, it opens 6pm - 10pm on weekdays and 4pm - 10pm at the weekend so if you're looking for early morning workouts or something to pass your lunch hour doing, this probably isn't for you.

Independent gyms can be a lot cheaper than the chains and offer just the same amount of facilities. One in my area charges £30 a year + £1 each time you go and offers everything you could need to shape your body apart from the modern, pristine environment. I think, if you're looking for a family gym, you're going to have to spend a bit more as most independents cater more for adults who are going for the one thing - to workout relatively hard. At least that's my exerience. One good thing about independent gyms that I've found is that they can offer discounts for family/joint membership. Another local gym of mine which usually charges £35 per month, cuts it down to £28 per month if you get a joint membership with a family member. The downside is, these are usually on 12-month contracts so you would have to be committed.

Local leisure centres are another option although, again, you'll probably be restricted to certain times but usually have a good selection of equipment along with a sauna, pool etc.

If you have a Bannatyne's (owned by Duncan Bannatyne from Dragon's Den) in your area they're currently (or were, last month) allowing you to join for free rather than paying a £300 sign-up fee. The membership is £40 a month though but is well worth it as every Bannatyne gym is packed with everything you could possibly want, including digital tv ;)

Thanks, i was really looking for initially myself to make sure i was gonna use it then introduce our kids of 7 wks, 4 years and 5 years and OH too and really would want it to include daytime classess for me and after school tennis lessons or swimming or fitness activities for the kids. I do 2 aerobic classes a week anyway and the kids will be starting some evening classes anyway so thought it might be better value to pay for membership of the gym and get all their benefits than go to all separate classes as it will cost us at least £20 per week anyway just for one or 2 evenings a week.
  • Try Total Fittness. Its really great for kids,my children love it!;)))
  • Pure gym is great, they are fairly new and popping up all over the UK at the moment. For the new gyms that are just opening they give special prices for those who join before they open eg £12.99 a month.
The one i go to is £16.99 a month which is their average price i think, gyms are all brand new, with loads of equipment, massive changing rooms and lockers, showers etc. No pool though as they are meant to be a cheaper "no frills" gym. They do also run classes which are free!
  • Avoid Fitness First in Manchester like the plague. The scumbags keep sending me unsolicited texts. If they resort to such tactics, I wouldn't trust them with money, bank details etc.

  • pure gyms sound good but i dont like the idea that there are no staff on duty during the night just cctv
you also have to be over 18 to join

    http://www.puregym.co.uk/Pure-Gym/The-Concept

me & oh joined totalfitness in september & paid £295 each for a year

which we were happy with as it was about £5 a month less than our previous gym

if you enter the competition to win a years membership here

    http://www.totalfitness.co.uk/family-and-kids/

they will start sending you special joining offers.

Or go in towards the end of the month when they are desperate to fill their quotas but do be prepared for a hard sell

go and look at the gym you are interested in an ask for a 1 day trial - you need to be sure before you pay any money :D

I'm paying £42 at LA Fitness and I can go to any gym in the UK (except London). Reading other posts I think it's quite expensive.. PureGym is opening next month in the town I work in, it would be great if i could go at lunch time but they don't have a class timetable yet (i'm only interested in classes).

I'm also seriously considering leaving LA Fitness and then I'm sure I would get a better price if I decide to go back!!!
