claiming bank charges?

I keep reading on here about people reclaiming charges off the bank. Now this may be a stupid question, but can anyone do it? Say a hypothetical person (not me if the wife reads this, honest) had been irresponsible as a student and overspending for 4 of the last 5 years, therefore going overdrawn without authorisation regularly, would they still be able to claim the charges? Even though it's their fault and they should have tried to get an overdraft rather than burying their head in the sand when the letters came from the bank?
Just I figure over the last five years, we must be talking over £800 in charges, easily. If this is possible, how does it work, what are the dangers of doing it (ie will the bank close my account and leave me unable to get another?), and how long does it take?

Yes you can claim for charges over the last 6 years.
The point isn't so much the fact that you kept going over your limit but the sheer amount that they charged you for doing it. It is all about the fact that the banks make unreasonable charges when you do something a bit naughty. If they charged a fiver each time it might not be such a problem but £35  and up is just a little excessive for sending a slap on the wrists through the mail - if you see what I mean.
I keep telling people (and no I am not on commission!) to head on over to https://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk and have a read of the forums there. They are split down by bank so you can see what your particular "favourite" is up to and how other people are getting on with their claims. All the letters you need are there waiting for you to fill in the blanks.
I am claiming for my other half and have got as far a filing a court case - that is my job for tomorrow night.
Good luck!
