What this one?Large corporations and pension funds own a lot of property in Germany - as do quite a lot private citizens. A lot of property in the East is/was state owned.
There is quite a hefty tax incentive on BTL, but none for home ownership. It's not unusual for someone to live in a rented home but own a BTL.
Seems strange to me that you rent a property and own but rent out another for tax benefits.
I obviously am not aware of the specifics, but would this not be seen here as tax evasion?
Is this not what the politicians were doing?:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.

politicians were buying another house in addition to one they already owned, using expenses to pay off the mortgage and refurbish the place then selling at a capital gain, and pretending it was their PPP, even though it was their second home for expesnes purposes, to avoid CGT.
i don't see why renting a house and owning a BTL to take advantage of tax breaks would be tax evasion in any circumstances. if a govt incentivises a certain type of investment by offering tax breaks, it would be rather odd for the same govt to prosecute anyone seeking to take advantage of said incentives.0 -
it wasn't in 1988 when people claimed house prices were 3x income and apparently affordable that's why i said Berlin
it was an ironic post that whoooooshed passed most people

Rents were dirt cheap. I shared with someone who had been so anti-authority that the East Germans LET him emigrate to the West to spare themselves the trouble of looking after him. (Not the usual story in the History books.)
In 1977 it was out of the way from the centre of West Berlin (
The Kurfurstendamm) and the Berlin Wall meant it was a something of a back water because travel to other parts of West Berlin could take ages.
Now, with the Wall removed and transport links to the Old Centre restored, it is immediately below the heart of Berlin & very desirable. The left wing students and risque elements of my acquaintance have been moved on by landlords who have profited big time from unification.
I stayed there on leave a few times with my ex GF who was then a student at the Berlin University* in the late 80s. Being a squaddie when it was still under allied control was OK free travel on public transport, never pay parking tickets etc.
I was very glad I had brought my own GF with me as the Tgirls in some of the local bars were a bit too convincing not a mistake I would want to make.
When GW1 was on and the land battle started 3 or 4 Middle Eastern guys way laid me in the corner shop to ask if I was British, I took the diplomatic approach and laughed and said I was from Cork in Ireland.
I am not sure which one but after reunification they were going to make her section part of Humboldt the old east beast techie college. It later became part of the art university UdK Berlin. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

I'm sure it's not the sole example of wriggling you can think of.0 -

Can't say for sure, but I would guess it was legal. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
