SA Tax Return - HELP!!!

in Cutting tax
Hi there.....So sorry if this has been asked a million times, but:
I'm trying to fill out my SA return on line and I'm having a nightmare!! I've tried ringing HMRC but every time I get through they sound like Norman Collier......i.e. in a bath of water!!!!! Might be my phone?!!!
Anyway, I'm employed full time through a company and pay tax as normal. I registered as self employed in April 09 so I'm filing my online tax return for 09/10. One of the questions is:
In the tax year 6 April 2009 to 5 April 2010:
If you were an employee, director, office holder or agency worker, do you need to complete the employment section?
So here I've said YES and inserted my employers name. The next question asks if I were self employed - again I've put YES, But I'm not sure if this question relates to my self employed work or is it asking if I was self employed through my employer??? OMG I'm so confused!!!!
Anyway, I went along answering all the questions, checked my calculation at the end and I owe the tax man money! Now you might think this is OK, but I actually made a loss of about £400 in 09/10???? So, for all the money I paid out trying to get my business up and running, I made a loss  Am I doing something wrong??
Can someone please advise?
Thanks, Licious xx

Debt 1 = £700 - 1% = £7.00 - 28% :j
Debt 2 = £500 - 1% = £5.00 -33% :j
Debt 3 = £1900 - 1% = £19.00 - 2%
Debt 4 = £8000  - 1% = £80.00 - 0.5%

You are answering those questions so that the system knows what sources of income you had and generates the relevant pages for you to complete. So since you were both employed and self-employed in 09/10 you need to answer yes to both.
When you get further on you enter the pay and tax deducted from your PAYE employment on the employment section and your turnover and various expenses on the self-employment section. Make sure you also enter any benefits in kind or expenses to do with your PAYE employment on the employment section - examples include medical benefit, company car or fuel benefit and such things as professional fees. You should have a P11d from your employer for the benefits in kind. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If you are struggling with the on-line Return it might be a good idea to delete all the entries you have made for your self-employment, uncheck, or say no to the self-employment question and concentrate solely on completing the employment pages.
Then look at the computation to see whether you are underpaid or overpaid.
If your employment is straightforward you should find that your tax is approximately correct.
If that is not the case, can you see what has gone wrong?
Once you are happy with the employment pages, go back and say yes to self-employment and fill in those pages and be sure you are showing a loss.
Now if something is still wrong you will only have the self-employment pages to worry about.0
