I'm shocked

I'm currently sitting in the pdsa with my cat and about 15 minutes ago we could all hear an owner crying as his dog was pts.

This is very understandable.

However, why did the vet choose to do it on the floor next to the consulting room door so when the owner fled out the room, the poor dog was lying there for all to see.

Should i make a complaint?
just passing through.... Nothing to see....

  • I saw this on your FB Limelight. I would put it in writing to them, to make sure they realise this has happened, I'm sure that they wouldn't want it to become a regular occurence.

Feel so sorry for those people... :(

Was it a large dog that maybe the vets would have a problem lifting?

My cat was PTS 2 weeks ago... but the vet came home to do it so although painful for us, it was different...as we got to cuddle him and he was in his familiar surroundings till the last moment...

Poor people, feel sorry for them :(

Maybe the dog had collapsed onto the floor in pain and the vet felt it was kinder to do it in situ rather than risk further pain by moving him. I would not personally complain, but assume that the vet had a valid reason for ding so, if I really could not rest I would call in and ask.

As above, I would not complain either - PDSA is doing brilliant work and what they do not need are complaints from people not directly involved/affected by what may just SEEM to be "wrong thing to do".

You do not know what exactly happened, what the circumstances were....

Another explanation could be, if it was a medium/large dog, perhaps the owner was sitting on the floor with the dog in her lap when it was pts? Maybe it was too big to sit on a chair with it on her lap and she didn't just want it on the table.
I'm sure the owner would complain if they were upset by it; and if they weren't, then I don't think it's your business to complain. The PDSA does such good work, like gettingready says; every complaint they get obviously takes time and money away from caring for animals, so in a situation like this, I would not do it.

No, I don't believe you should complain.

As others have said, there could be various reasons why the dog was put to sleep on the floor of the consulting room, which could have included trying to make it not suffer anymore pain. You do not know the reasons why this dog was where it was and to be honest, I'm sorry to say that it isn't your place to be making a complaint. If the owner of the dog was in any way upset by what went on in that room then it is up to them to make a complaint, not anyone else.

The vet wasn't to know that the owner would, as you put it, flee from the room and so probably didn't expect others to see where the dog was and it certainly isn't up to the vet to start discussing with the waiting room what's going on when a poor dog has been euthanised and the owner is clearly distraught.

When we had our beloved dog PTS 2 years ago at the vets, she was on the floor as she had arthritis and would have suffered being lifted on to the table. However we carried her out afterwards to the car and brought her home to bury.If there was anyone in the waiting room who was upset by the sight of our dead dog then we were unaware, being far too upset ourselves. And if they were, then what should we have done? Sneaked out the back way? waited till everyone had been seen while our precious dog was shoved into a cupboard, out of sight?

So no ,there should be no complaint,it is a sad fact that many more animals have to be PTS that die naturally. And to be honest I am glad of that fact because if vets were not allowed to carry out such a humane act there would be a great deal of suffering caused to our beloved pets.

To be honest i am beginning to wonder if the post was a wind up.How could anyone think more of their own feelings than the poor owner?

I agree with the other post. I'm sure there was a reason why it happened or done that way. I know you are concern but I think it will be best just to ignore the matter and not to file any complaint.

Perhaps the OP should go to a different vet where the office layout will not lead to events such as this.
  • I think I'd probably be sitting on the floor, hugging and sobbing into a dog's neck as it happened. So unfortunate a sight as it may have been, it was probably the kindest way for both dog and owner.

Not really something to complain about, I think.
