I still dislike how media stories play loose and fast with terms like deficit and national debt. No wonder the average public person gets confused.

These sales will provide a one time hit to the deficit in income for that year.

As for commercial property I hope they don't follow the path of HMRC who now lease back their offices. The company which is the landlord is now registered offshore, depriving the treasury of much needed tax coffers. We really can't afford the loss of even more tax income going offshore.

Unfortunately its the British way. A short term view.

As longer term the profits will flow overseas from the ownership of the property.

    >MOD housing already sold off<

And the vast majority of police housing has already gone. The coppers have been selling off capital assets now for ages, most Force HQs are PFI wheezes and 'stations' are a desk in Tescos.

Even the bizzie's radios are owned by Macquarie Bank after Airwave was sold by Telefonica.

Indeed, and will the government press ahead with the last governments' plans for PFI'ing the MOD training facilities, a deal thought to be worth £13.5bn...

    It's already surrounded by controversy.

In years to come, we are going to be reading in the good old Private Eye about people who became wealthy during this turbulent period, and their rather curious relationships to the people in power.

    Thus it ever twas...

Indeed they have. More PFI was always on the table regardless of the party in power. We shall be paying for these commitments long into the future.

let me get this right - they are going to sell the properties with tenants renting the property and the buyer of these properties is going to maintain them at their old very cheap rents.

    it's not going to happen.
