Changing hours to suit them.

My boss asked us last month to help cut costs and so some of us said we would cut our hours.
I only work one day a week there as it is and cut my hours to 5 per week to help her out and because it was better for me as my partner had found full time work and I have a child at school.
The thing is I told them it would be difficult for me to work outside of school hours as I have no childcare apart from my mum who lives 45 mins drive away.
I found out last week that they have put me down to work extra hours for the next 3 weeks and I can't do it (they didn't ask me, just assumed I would do it) My mum has said she cannot afford the petrol driving up and down anymore, she is having to sell her house because of money issues and is stressed enough as it is. I therefore have no one to drop my child at school or pick her up.
One of the day's is in the half term too and therefore i have no childcare and cannot work a full day, when i said this to the manager at work she rang up another employee there and asked if she could look after my child so i could work all day!!
My daughter doesn't even know this woman, it would be like dropping her off at a strangers house and me saying see you in 9 hours! also this woman has 2 young children of her own and i feel its very unfair to put her in that position of having to also look after my daughter for 9 hours. I don't earn that much and cannot afford to pay for childcare, its just not worth it.
I feel sad as i have worked there for 10 years but i really feel the best option is to quit, I just can't work any extra hours outside of school times and now my mum is out of the picture the school holidays are going to be impossible. My work is 15 miles away there and back and im not sure even my 5 hours wages are covering the petrol atm.
I only have to work a weeks notice, but i don't want to drive to work to tell them this, so i'm thinking can you verbally resign and then send a letter in? or do i have to do it in person? Also i still have 2 holiday days left this year, so would i get paid for these or not?

Give them a letter of resignation when you next go into work, like you say, a weeks notice or do you not plan to work this.
You should get any pay and accrued holidays due.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

15 miles costs approx £1.50 in money.....

I'm not due back into work until Friday and tbh I wanted to get this over with, I'm not a very confident person and I find it hard to stick up for myself when told to do things I'm not happy with!!
I would rather hand my notice in Monday and then if they want me to work next Fri then that would be my last day, otherwise if i hand it in Friday then i will have to work the following Friday which is the half term date that i cannot do.
Also i have 2 days holiday, so maybe i could take next friday as one day and she could just pay me for 1 other day.
It's also not just my petrol costs but also my mums driving 45 mins to my house and back again, or sometimes i have to drive to her to drop my daughter off and its alot of hassle and costs just for 5 hours work a week.
It annoys me that i don't get asked if i can work extra hours i just get put on the rota and am expected to do it! Its lucky i even looked at it to see that i was down for it or else i doubt anyone would have bothered to tell me.0 -
You say you have 2 days left this year, if you resign now (not the end of the year) you won't be entitled to a full years annual leave0

Yeah i wondered about that, oh well maybe they will just say they don't need me next week, its silly theres hardly any work for me to do when they are fully staffed, but if someone is sick or on hols, suddenly its panic stations and they want you to work xyz hours without even asking you.
I will ring them monday and post the letter in i think, and see what they say i guess. I can;t be as flexible as they want me to be, so i feel it is either resign or she may well tell me she doesn;t need me anymore.0 -
I'm a bit out of touch with childcare legislation, but I didn't think it was legal to have a child cared for by somebody wo wasn't a family member of registered as a childminder?
I realise this is a bit 'after the horse has bolted' if you've decided to hand in your resgination.Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -

Why not just not do the extra hours?
You don't need to put yourself out for them or have your child cared for by their selected childminder.
You have agreed a new reduced hours and you advised this would be during school hours.
What did you do before about school holidays?
Any clauses in the original contracts or a condition of reduced hours that you work xtra hours when asked?
What would they have done if you had refused to take the reduction in hours in the first?
I would hang on nd get them o make you redundant 10weeks notice and 10 weeks redudancy so 20days exra pay(1 day a week) if you earn less than £380pw0 -
No, my mum mentioned this to me as well, I've not looked into the laws myself but I remember seeing someone getting into trouble for doing this as they werent registered as a childminder, which this woman isn't and she isn't family either.!
It just annoyed me that my child was treated as an object to just be passed around to whoever, just so i can help them out! It's not that i don't trust this woman to look after her as i do know her, just why should she have to, and get nothing back from it? and why should i pay her when i don't want to leave her there or work the hours anyway?
I have been at work 10 years, but only been there 2 yrs on this contract after taking a extended maternity break. So at most redundancy would be 2 days pay.
Before my mum used to drive up to look after my daughter, but she lives 45 mins away and its got more awkurd now shes at school, as i cant expect my mum to drive 30 odd miles to me at 8.30am to drop her off at school, then me drive 15 miles to work, then 15 miles back and my mum another 30 miles home just so i can do them a favour. In the school holidays before i had to drive my daughter to my mums the day before work so she could stay over night until i could pick her up on fri PM or sat. But now i have cut my hours to 5 it hardly seems worth all this effort, petrol costs, wear and tear on my car to drive like a lunatic back and forth just to work for a day or two to help them out now and then when people are on holiday or off sick.
I didn't have to cut my hours but i offered as my boss says the company is not making much profit atm and also because it suited me better as well, but now i have lost my childcare and my parents are moving due to money problems, and possibly moving even further away, i can't see that i am gonna be able to work something out so would rather qui while i am ahead so to speak.0 -

Only in the screwed up Daily Wail world. Thankfully common sense seems to take precedence over this and many of the other hundreds of pathetic laws the last govt made.0 -

No where in the OP is there any mention of redundancy, where did you get that from.In fact just the opposite, they are asking the OP to work more hours. I dont think there is anyway she could get them to make her redundant, I mean, if you were her employer, would you, considering all the extra cost to the company?make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
