SSP help please

Hi all, hope someone can give some advice as my dad is stressing out.

He is over 60 and worked for the same firm for 20 years and never had a contract of employment. When he was off for a long period recovering from cancer his firm paid him full wage, he has had little time off in all his years there for minor ailments etc. He has now been signed off sick for 2 weeks by his doctor as he has lost the use of his left arm and cant grip and in pain. He told his boss although he has been signed off if his work is desperate for staff he will do the odd hour and there to help out (thats the sort of person he is, hates to do nothing). His boss has told him today money is tight and will have to go on SSP which is £10 day but can claim to the government to make it up? Has anybody had recent dealings with SSP? Many thanks in advance

SSP is £70.05 a week so £10 a day sounds about right, you cannot claim extra SSP than that amount.

As above SSP payable at £70.05 a week for 28 weeks, then it's back to the jolly old DWP.
However, as he has been paid full pay when he was sick before, this could become an implied part of his employment contract-ie it does not have to be written down, just that it has always been so.
Might be worth your dad having a word with ACAS.Always very helpful.
    Good luck.
  • Two things:

Firstly, if your dad is signed off sick and claiming SSP he really shouldnt be working. Not only from a claiming benefit point of view but if hes too sick to work, hes too sick to work. His employers might question whether his sickness is genuine if he offers his services, no matter how good his intentions might be.

Secondly, you say your dad doesnt have a contract, but he has a verbal contract if not written one.

Yes, the £70 odd is SSP.

You can check out other benefits he might be entitled to on

I hope his condition improves soon - ive recently had a spell off work sick and its not much fun. Good luck.
