Deep Fat Fryer - recommendations please ?

I have never had a fryer if I do chips they are oven chips, however I would like to have a go at tempura batter so thought I would get one (and then have real chips also lol)

There a 5 of us but I dont want a massive one as I dont mind cooking in batches.

Anyone got one they are really pleased with at a good price please?

    It's a great fryer and most importantly, for me, it's easy to clean because it all separates and the part that holds the oil lifts out.

    Plus I find it easier to store than the usual round shaped fryers, it doesn't seem to take up as much room.

    If your not a complete muppet, i would suggest saving some money and filling a pan or pot with oil heating it to desired temp ang going from there. This way you can clean it out easily, oil is easy to change and if you dont want your kitchen stinking of deep fried food you can move the pot you use to somewhere you dont mind smelling a bit(utility room). Find a sieve that fits into your pot or pan well and use that to cook your chips.

    Im wondering if my mum would be better with a mini deep fat fryer.

    She has recently moved, and has bought a mini oven with 2 integral electric rings. She cant get to grips with the heat (shes always had a gas cooker) and so shes not plucked up the confidence to try her chip pan on it.

    Now my mum is getting on, and im really worried about her using/lifting/moving a chip pan (poor eyesight, reduced mobility, unfamiliar and small hob) Ive suggested I do the occasional chip run for her on a friday, but she still longs to make herself some home made chips! I wondered if a little mini fat fryer would be simpler and safer.

    Any recommendations gratefully recieved.

    One silly question, as I know nothing about fryers, can you use fat/lard or does it have to be oil. (I know she has always favoured lard:o)

    Ever seen a chip pan on fire? I have.

    Buy a proper fryer, much much safer.

    I have one similar to the one above and agree the great thing about it is the fact it can be totally taken to bits. This means the metal container that holds the oil can be washed (or even put in the dishwasher - but I tend not to do that). The silver outer surround can also be cleaned easily.

    And then when you are finished, just slot it all back together again.

  • A halogen cooker cooks oven chips far better than an oven, its heavy lid seals in the moisture, and the timer and temperature controls allows you to get consistent results. It might be a healthier option to a fryer.
