pc World manufacturer's warranty

Options
We went to PC world today looking to buy a laptop. We saw one that we were interested in and the salesman then started on about the 7.99 per month warranty which would cover us for every eventuality. When I said that I thought the laptop was under warranty for the first year anyway he told us that the first years warranty on their computers was with the manufacturer and not with PC world and that if we had a problem with the laptop in the first year and didn't have their 7.99 cover they would not try to rectify it in PC world but would return it to the manufacturer. Is this correct? I always thought that the retailer was responsible in the first year - are computers different?

(We didn't buy the laptop in the end as they couldn't find the battery!!!)

You are right, if a product goes wrong, your contract is with the retailer.
He was talking absolute rubbish, he'll be on commission re insurnace sales.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Nope, he's not on commission, instead he'll be being heavily pushed to sell not only the insurance but also the mobile broadband contract, office, etc, and if he doesn't tick enough boxes he'll be threatened with disciplinary action.

First 12 months is manufacturers warranty. PC World will as they return the laptop to the manufacturer. I suspect they will do so whether you pay £7.99/month or not.

Sony, Asus, Apple and Dell warranty repairs are all carried out by the manufacturer. Practically all other brands are done by the Tech Guys at Newark,

My laptop from PC World broke after 9 months.
I didn't have the extended guarantee so took it back to the shop who sent it off to Tech Guys.
I was told it would be 28 days max and if not done by then I would be entitled to a replacament or refund.
28 days later I returned to the shop and was told there was nothing they could do and I'd have to just wait.
Another week passed and I went back again, they said the parts were out of stock and I could have a replacement up to the value paid but no refund, we looked at the small display of full size laptops (most of them were the netbooks) and none of them came anywhere near the specs of the one I had so we decided to wait.
2 weeks later I rang Tech Guys and was told the parts were only ordered the day before and I was now entitled to a replacement of the same specs, I asked 3 times was it definitely the same specs and not price and she said yes then rang me 5 mins later to say she's made a mistake and it was price only.
I wrote to PC World head office telling them how disgusted I was with my treatment and got no reply but 3 days later my laptop was suddenly ready. I picked it up and got no apology for the delay or extension to the warranty.
I wouldn't buy form them ever again.

Should add too that Samsung aren't repaired by Tech Guys.

And dibuzz, under the warranty, after 28 days at repair, you should get the original price paid as a credit to a new one. It's NOT like for like under the warranty, although some stores may be more lenient and give a discount on a similar spec laptop.

If a customer couldn't find a replacement, I would offer the refund, if it were myself there.

You can see where they get confused though, if inder warrenty, they write it off at 28 days for the purchase value. If its under WEH, then at 28 (or 10) days they write it off spec for spec.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Oh yeah. I've always though there's a weird discrepancy somewhere, as under warranty at 28 days, you get a new one right there, but with WEH, you have to wait for vouchers. Never understood that.
