Constantly getting calls for someone who doesn't live here

I'm not sure this website is the right place to query this; there may be some TPS type forums out there I should be asking on.
Basically, we moved into a house in March 2006 and paid for a NTL telephone line to be fitted. As soon the phone line was fitted (X-Directory!) we started getting calls for a Mr Corona -- someone none of us know anything about. Some of these calls are quite rude and the operators are very blunt. We get calls (sometimes two or three) every night and I'm really starting to get sick of it. We always tell them that we moved in in March and we don't know this person and they always say "Ok, sorry to bother you.." then they just call back.
I've registered with the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) in the hope these calls would stop but yet they still come frequently -- even when I say that I'm registered with the TPS and it's illegal to call me without my say-so they don't seem to listen.
They won't tell me why they are calling or who they are -- this makes it worse. I can only imagine this person used to live here and has got bad debts or something but we're now being called all the time over it
They call at time like 6am sometimes too.
Does anybody have the remotest idea what I should do to stop this apart from changing my number -- registering with the TPS was supposed to be the solution but evidently not
Cheers

Add your number here http://www.ukdatait.co.uk/cgi-bin/sgAddNumber.cgi
Get in contact with your telephone supplier and tell them what is happening, they should act on your call.

Wow - that was easy. Let's see what happens here. I'm just about to call my provider; it was the first thing I thought of after typing this post. I was a little irate when I wrote the post having just walked through the door getting in from work to make a cuppa and put my feet up only to be greeted to the phone ringing twice in a row from two different people asking for this person. Grrr... it's really stressing us all out.
We get a lot of bad letters for 3 people (I wonder if it's the same person) under names of "Wong", "Fong" and "Vong" too -- I think we've moved into the debt house or something :rolleyes:Lightbulb moment, Feb 2006

Have you tried 1471 to find out the number that's ringing you? If you have a number - post it and perhaps someone will recognise it.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

I would also get a credit check on your address and then call the credit reference compaines and sort it, I belive its free for 30 days!
I would also get caller ID and anonymous caller reject.
This way their number must be shown to you before you pick up!
But do get your provider to get of thier behind's and do something!

~sammy_kaye18 that's bad. We've never had bailifs... I'd be scared witless
I called NTL who provide our phone line and she couldn't tell me if anybody else has ever had this number. She also said that just because I'm X-Directory and registered with the TPS doesn't mean I won't get calls... she said they get the phone numbers from all kinds of sources. The first thing she said was that they can change my phone number (which obviously I was hesistant to do without speaking with the rest of the house) and then we I explained that they don't say who they are and use withheld numbers she put an anonymous caller block on the line. We'll see if it helps.
I bet there are loads of people who move into rented houses and have to deal with previous tenant's debt -- is there a way to look this sort of thing up before moving into a place?
About the credit check -- good idea. They only cost £2 and I haven't had one done since I moved in here so I'll see if it shows anything up.Lightbulb moment, Feb 2006
