in Cutting tax
If anyone could give some advice or knows how I stand on this situation I would be very greatful.
I started job 1 6 years ago and then started job 2 a year later. I then left job 1 and started job 3 in january. Since january my tax has been 1/4 of my wages and I have phoned HMRC and written 4 letters to get the issues resolved.
I was told in August that I owed £1,800 in underpaid tax due to being given 2 tax allowences. I found out yesterday that the figure has been changed and I now owe then £3,600 and they want it paid within 6 weeks as they cannot reclaim through my tax code.
The reason? When I started at job 2 I was still working at job 1 and did so for 4 years. My records were noted that I had ceased employement with job 1 so may tax was just calculated against job 2. Unfortunatly the tax office are saying there is insufficient notes on my record to say why this has happened and are unable to say whether it was down to my employer or an error on there part.
I don't understand how I can be solely accountable for paying all this money back when it was a HMRC error. They want to give me £60 in compensation for the errors and mistakes in information!
I have said that HMRC have recieved information from my employers about the tax ive been paying P60's etc and they havent acted on it but they are saying this information doesn't count.
What can i do?

Sorry to hear of your troubles.
I cannot offer any certain advise, as tax codes etc will be needed as well pay £ etc.
However
Make sure you keep copies of anything you send, note of any phone calls to whom etc.

Hi,
I have looked on this site but didn't realy give me what I need. I just need to find out if I am at fault or the HMRC are and how I can prove it. I haven't got £3,600 :-c0 -

So if I read this correctly you had 2 jobs for 4 years?
If that was the case you should have had a tax code of the personal allowance attached to one job and BR attached to the other job.
What were your tax codes for Job 1 and Job 2 for those 4 years?0 -
Hi, I have had 2 jobs for the last 7 years but it's the first year where all this mess has come from.
The HMRC have said they have written down that I ceased employmnet for job 1 when I started job 2 but they still taxed me. Im very confused!
Job 1 my tax code has been 508L, 625L, 608L, 548L, 494L, 527L,
Job 2 my tax code has been 522L for 2007/2008 Ive also got 503L and 489LW in 2006
Im even more confused now0 -

Basically it looks like you have been receiving your personal allowances twice and you should not have been. Why did you not notice this?
How much did you earn in Job 1 and Job 2?0 -
You may think Im being a bit silly but no one has ever told me how much i should be tax paying and what my tax codes should be. I thought that was the HMRC job. I just know how much i get paid each month.A little niave but its the tax office that have incorrect information and have made mistakes. I know i am to blame for some of this.
May pay has varied over the years. usually between £800-900 per onth for both jobs.0 -
they said Ive received 2 allowences because they had on my file that i only had 1 job. Ive paid tax on both jobs just not enough.0

Unfortunately it is your job to make sure you are paying the correct amount of tax.
When you started at Job 2 how did you get allocated a tax code? As you did not have a P45 from Job 1 did you complete a P46?May pay has varied over the years. usually between £800-900 per onth for both jobs.
Then you should definitely have had the tax code BR applied to one of them.lilacjaffa wrote: »they said Ive received 2 allowences because they had on my file that i only had 1 job. Ive paid tax on both jobs just not enough.
So who has your other job on file?0 -
There is no P46 on file for me ive checked with payrole they said it was issued by the tax office.0
-
HMRC have said that they had on my file that I had left job 1 when i started job 2 when i didnt. they dont know if this information has come from my employer or a mistake on their part0
