Hard-wearing work shoes

I have to wear standard black shoes with my suit to work, but I am very heavy on my feet and wearing them every day means there don't last very long.

Can anyone recommend any hard wearing shoes that are comfortable and will last. I've heard that Ecco are quite hard wearing but they are v expensive and although I'm willing to pay for a good pair of shoes, it's a lot of money to risk if they won't last all that long.

Thanks

I have to walk to work and have wide feet. I find Evans flat shoes are very good and last for ages, they cost about £35 if not lucky enough to find in a sale.

Safety shoes £15 from Toolstation. They're very hard wearing and handy if you should ever drop a filing cabinet on your foot.

I'm often on my feet at work and I commute so need comfy hard wearing shoes for the walk to and from the train station. I swear by Skechers. I bought a pair for £15 from Sports Direct in the sale and they've been going strong for ages now. They're the biker sort so are a bit harder and more robust than usual Skechers.

One thing to be cautious of though is that Skechers come up big- I have three pairs and all are a size 5 instead of my usual size 6.

I wear Ecco shoes and they last for years. I'm on my feet all day at work and they are very comfortable. You can buy cheaper shoes but I am happy to pay for the durability and comfort.
  • I have a very smart pair of safety brogues with gel insoles by Uxex. They appear to be £50-60 online but I got them on ebay for about £20.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Hi! I understand how it feels to spend your hard earned money into something that won't last for long. I would recommend that you read online reviews of shoe brands that are most popular in the market. Satisfied customers will definitely write about their experience. Also, you may ask friends or relatives for any suggestions.

How long your pair of shoes will last, all depends on how you use and care for it. So once you have bought one, make sure to use shoe care products to keep your shoes well conditioned. This will protect your shoes from scratches.
  • I wear black trainers - no-one has said a thing, they are comfy, cheap, and they last ages!

I see somebody has already pointed you towards Dr Martens, but I wonder if it's worth looking at their "for life" range. I have just bought a pair of the for life shoes and am wearing them in. Expensive up front, and I'm sceptical that they'll still be replacing them for me in 40 years, but probably not a bad deal if you get through shoes quickly.

It might be helpful if we knew your gender but, either way, have a look at Hotter. If you sign up on their website they are a bit keen on keeping in touch with you but do send various offers through.

Incidentally, if you are a heavy on your feet it might mean a gait problem which could lead to back or joint pain later in life (speaking as one who knows) so you could ask your doctor to refer you to a podiatrist. If necessary they will give you special insoles to correct it which will help the wear on your shoes. Hotter, Ecco and various other manufacturers do shoes where you can pull out their insoles and replace them with the special ones. They also tend to have styles with chunkier soles which reduce the impact when you're, like me, stomping around!

Take a look at TK Maxx, Hotter, Ecco and Skecher shoes turn up there from time to time. Hotter also have some outlets and factory shops around the country.
