Tarnished stainless steel

We bought good quality stainless steel cutlery but a few years of dishwashing seems to have left them tarnished or with water marks.
Is there anything we can do to make them look as good as new?

If they're just surface marks, a scrub with a nylon scouring pad should bring them up. However, if they're deeper pits, there's probably not a lot you can do - SS cutlery does tend to go like that after a while if washed in the DW. If you use Finish, you might want to try a gentler detergent such as Fairy or Glist.0

I have always used Finish, I didnt realise there was a difference between brands.
I was hoping someone would come up with a wonderful oldstyle remedy.0 -
Boil the kettle and put them in a saucepan on the heat with lots of little balls of silver foil, the silver foil takes all the tarnish. Or use soda crystals.Pawpurrs x0

Finish wrecked my drinking glasses (quite tough Ikea ones) in a few months, and I've never had that problem with any other brand, either big brands like Fairy & Glist, or supermarket own brands. The very fact that Finish included a 'glass protector' in the newer versions shows it obviously was a problem, and if it does that to glass, can't imagine stainless steel putting up much resistance.0
