can one partner reduce tax on others job loss?

Hi,

My brother has just been made redundant after 20 continuous years of work, but his wife is still working, she is a nurse and seems to pay a lot of of tax each month.
Is there any way she can get a reduction in her tax because her husband has lost his job?
And who does she need to talk to because he has found that contacting benefit offices has been so confusing with each office having different rules.

  • Unfortunately your sister in law's tax is not effected by her husband not working. Personal allowances are non transferable. If she thinks she is paying over the odds on her PAYE though, she needs to check her payslip and see what tax code is on it...always worth ringing HMRC if in doubt.
  • Thanks for that, we are real novices at benefits and tax etc so thought i'd try and help out by getting some info for them.
Again much appreciated i'll pass your information on.
