            Hi,
Firstly have you done the creditfile clean up, stickies are at the top of the page. Also I don't mean to sound rude but are you currently working? I ask that because of your children I know it is impossible for me at the moment with one and twins on the way!0 -
However difficult your current home, a council house does provide some security. If you rented privately, should you ever need to claim housing benefit (you don't say if you are working at the moment), the amount you get may not be enough to pay the rent leading to real problems. Also a private rent could mean that you get two months notice that a landlord wants his property back, leaving you to find a new home with the children.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Have you tried Homeswapper? Its free for lots of council/HA tenants if your council is on the list so ask them. Even if you downsized. A secure tenancy is far better for you than a private rental, but ultimately the location is the most important hence the potential downsize.
I am a single Mum to 5 and live in a 2-bed council house. I am picky on the area I will live in and the kids share the rooms because of this. It's a nice safe area and I although being stacked on top of each other bring certain issues with it (!) it certainly is far better than a lot of the areas in this town I could exchange/be offered to move to.
Please also bear in mind that the rules are changing. The governement is introducing a maximum of LHA per week regardless of the size of the property or the location. They are also planning to introduce a cap of benefits per week regardless of the amount of children you have whether you are on income support or working. Hold fire before you make any rash decicions on moving to a rental as you could find yourself worse off financially too.0
