I agree with all of the above- keep at them until they find something suitable.-I'm a fitter (that'snot very fit) and the work trousers go up to a size 18, and although an M&S size 18 would fit, these things are obviously made by candlelight in a dark hovel with a very stretchy tape measure-they are more like a size 12-14. Honestly.

I ended up wearing my own. Comfier too.

Magic knickers from M&S will drop a dress size for the trousers for you.

Could you wear a same coloured Tee shirt underneath and leave the blouse open like a jacket?

and of course, I look forward to seeing you post in just a little while saying now you are happy at work in your new job you've lost weight without even trying, now can someone tell you what's the best way to take in blouses?:j

Hiya Snowyowl, first of all I would like to offer my congratulations on your new job. :)

What you need to find out is if they can order you some uniform that will fit. I understand that you probably won't want to put your size on here but I know that where I work they have uniform up to at least a size 30 as when I worked with the girls who ordered uniforms they gave me a bunch of orders to email to the supplier as they didn't have any in stock. Just because they didn't have any in when you asked for it doesn't mean it can't be obtained.

Good luck with it and let us know how you get on.

LTS - thank you for the benefit of your experience. I know, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and speak to someone in the HR dept - just wish that it was a woman who dealt with me rather than a bloke.

    Congratulations on your new job!

Your average bloke won't know the difference between a size 16, a size 20 or a size 30. Just put a confident face on and jump right in. :j
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • This happened to me recently. I had to wear a top with the companys logo on it, and they only had them made for like size 10. Anyways what happened in the end is that i bought a few black tops and they got them printed with the logos on it, it was embarassing thought. And to top it off, i didnt get offered the job in the first place and they told me that was the only reason, they knew the uniform wouldnt fit. But then when they hired someone else and it fell through, they came back to me and we discussed me buying my own tops and them gettign it printed. Why didnt they just think of that in the first place? Save me the embarasment

Hi all, thanks again for all the advice and reassurance.

I've had a chat to a girl in HR - she told me to come in on the first day in civvies...and that she'd see what she had in the stock room. I spelt out to her exactly what the problem was. If nothing fits on my first day...oh God I don't want to think about that.... lol. I am suddenly very motivated to stick to a new diet and exercise regime...just an inch or two in the right places might make all the difference... Just over a week to go before I start... Pray for me please....

Don't forget the magic undies idea suggested by someone above!!
Of course you will be anxious etc about a new job but you have lots of people wishing you well. Good luck and enjoy the new challenge.
I would probably go in pair of black trousers and a plain top - that way even if the top they have doesn't fit there might be fleece or bodywarmer thing that does and you can leave it undone.
    All the best.

SnowyOwl a friend of mine had a similar problem and they said that they would get some made in his size, but he asked if he could buy a similar design himself and then bring in the receipts , they were happy for him to do this :T

  • hiya hun,
well as you know i used to be a checkout superviser at tesco before i had my children.
we came across the exact problem you have described a few times.
its soooooooooooooooooo unlikely they'll withdraw the job offer just over something as silly as uniform, they just wouldnt and if they did you'd have a very strong case for discrimination.
what we used to do was ask people to wear a white shirt or t'shirt with plain black trousers......other staff that had just been taken on used to wear this anyway whilst waiting for uniform so you wouldnt look totall out of place, people would just think you were new.
another solution one woman used was to try the maternity wear!! she tried on(at her request) the largest size in the maternity uniform and it fitted so she used that.

it wont be nice for you....but go and visit the personel department and explain.they'll come up with a solution for you.

I remember a few years back that one supermarket near where i live, better not say who just in case, actually got into trouble for saying they would only take staff on who were a size 14 and under and that was the biggest size for their uniforms. Boy did they get raked over the coals for discrimination. It's a proven fact that british women average size is now a size 14/16 whereas it used to be a 10/12 and if you look at the racks in stores such as M&S all the bigger sizes have been sold and only the size 8/10/12 are left which says quite allot. Women and men are actually getting bigger. I think its a bit heartless though for a company to only buy in certain sizes of uniforms when you consider the above but then again the manufacturers of these uniforms mostly only go up to a size 14:confused: the ones that go bigger charge extra by the size, its about time they stopped this discrimination and realised that we are all bigger than we were 20 years ago. I had this same problem when i went back to college about 10 years ago, the only place i could get a uniform back then was from a place in Ireland who made them to order to all your measurements but boy did they cost, brilliant uniform just expensive.
