Admiral Passed Bill To Debt Collectors

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me with some advice.

Over a year ago I bought 1 years insurance with Admiral car insurance. They charged me £580 for the year.

When the renewal time came I did not have the money to continue with it so I stopped driving the car until I could get some money together.

When I went back to admiral to renew they said my account was in arrears and they would not let me renew. They said that because I did not notify them that I didn't want a second year, by default, they kept charging me for another month without my knowledge before the insurance was cancelled.

They told me I had to pay £90 but still couldnt renew. From my point of view I didn't ask for the cover during that period and was not driving the car so did not see any reason to pay.

They have passed the matter onto a debt collection agency now and have added a fee to it with the threat of further fees if I do not pay immediately.

I am unsure what to do, I do not think I should pay this bill. Money is very tight for me as I have been without work for sometime now. Should I write a letter to the debt collection agency and say that if they want me to pay they should escalate stright away to small claims court procedings? I don't want them to keep sending me letters with the ammount growing each time.

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

  • The first thing that comes to mind is to check the T&C's of the policy especially regarding renewals. If it is not in the T&C's that the policy is automatically renewed -- which is wht by the sounds of it they are saying -- then I don't think that they have a right to charge you.

I was always under the impression that car insurance was for a period of 12 not 13 months!

If there is nothing in the T&C's about the policy being automatically renewed then ask someone like the CAB to write to Admiral on your behalf pointing this out.

Hope this is of some use!
