After a bit of trial and error with ours it seems best to cook for the same amount of time as you would when using a saucepan. Must allow time for the steamer to start producing steam though!

I would say it depends how you like your veggies tbh. I tend to steam two veggies in the same dish like cauli and carrots and in the other one do the potatoes and mine always take about 35 mins, if I did them any less then the veggies would not be to my liking.

I use mine to steam puddings.

Trouble is mine is an old one, purchased about 10 years ago, and will need replacing soon. The new ones all have shallow baskets, which are no good for pudding steaming.

Has anyone seen one with deep baskets lately?

I have exactly the same problem. I take my pudding basin shopping with me to see if it will fit.

Some steamers (Tefal I think) now have baskets where the bases come out, so you could use the bottome two tiers with the "middle" out). This is only any good if you're only doing one pudding though. I make A LOT of puddings for Christmas (for friends and family), so they are no use to me!

Let me know if you find one

I LOVE my steamer - it's a 3 tier cheapy one but does the job fantastically well

The best thing about it is when 12 year old Nipper says mmm these veg taste nice! Got to be worth the investment, you can so taste the difference between boiled and steamed veg

Sorry that wasn't helpful on the timings question tho - I find I do mine for around 15 mins with chucnky stuff at bottom and easier cook stuff at top :o

My tefal one has 3 baskets, one of which is very deep. I have seen some with removable bases as well, but can't remember what make, and they are obviously very tall if you only put the bottom base in and have 2 or 3 baskets.
