Shopping in Calais - still worth it?

Hello,

Could anybody tell me if it's still worth going to Calais to buy alcohol?

I guess it depends on what you want to buy. We did a wine run for our wedding last week and still saved over £250, that also includes the cost of fuel and ferry crossing. We did buy over 200 bottles though. So for us it was worth it. We are based in Nottinghamshire so it was a bit of a drive!

I don't think it would be worth it for spirits and branded beer. As the uk supermarkets have really good offers on, especially in the run up to Christmas.

I would say don't bother if that's all you are going for and it isn't a big do (like poster above). Tescos drink store at citi europe has closed down (which to me says that no one goes over just for the booze any more). We got a few bottles in rural france that were miles cheaper than the calais stores. I would look for the uk supermarket deals too - and there are normally codes flying around for Tescos or Sainsburys for online wine deliveries.....
  • We take a trip to Arras a few times a year and usually use Carrefour and Lidl - in both supermarkets you can usually find decent quality wines much cheaper than here, even some of the wines costing little more than a euro are quite drinkable. Last time we managed to buy 330ml cans of Finkbrau German lager from Lidl for 22 cents a can! And it's decent as well. The Cremant sparkling wines in Lidl are also a really good buy. It's probably not worth a trip just to buy booze, but it is a great excuse to take a trip to lovely northern France.
  • Alcohol is definately a lot cheaper on the continent then here but you'll only make a saving if your buying in bulk or were planning on making the trip in the first place.
