3rd-MJM. I was in the 1995 scheme but unfortunately joined it 6 weeks after the special class status was changed, so could not retire until I was 60. When I applied for retirement i was given the choice of changing to 2008 scheme. I did this as it meant i would get £300 yr more. Not much I know, but its better in my pocket. Also, it means that if I go on to qualify for tier 2, then I would get a bit more as it would be enhanced as if I were retireing at 65. All paltry sume I know, but again, better in my pocket

Certainly better in yours than theirs, I am glad they offered you the choice, also the 45 year limit will not be an issue as you have part-time service.

I am afraid that from what I have been told it is very difficult to get the increase to Tier 2, I will be lucky to get Tier 1, I have OsteoArthritis in my mid thoracic, cervical spine and Inflammatory Arthritis, have been on the redeployment register for 2 months and applied for one job using the two ticks shortlist scheme and get this, I never got shortlisted. I was working on Front Line Ambulances and Response cars 6 months ago and now they won't even give me light duties or Disability Leave so I am on half pay.

When they consider you for Tier 2 they will find the one job that you would never do or there is no vacancy in, but with some reasonable adjustments they will say you could do it. In fact getting PUed in the Ambulance service has been a rare occurance indeed during the last 5 or 6 years, as management would rather just sack you for capability, if they can do this before you are given the AW33E form then you can't even apply for Tier 1 anymore, you can only apply Tier 2.

At least they can't take your Tier 1 away, so nothing lost in trying for Tier 2, but the way the NHSBA is acting these days i doubt you will get a positive outcome.

If you don't mind me asking, how many years pension did you have, as you may not be in line for much of an increase with Tier 2 anyway, especially if you were in the 1995 Section as you could retire in 3 years anyway. Surely with 41 years service you where at max pension anyway? Or did you have some time working P/T?

Tier 2 is basically the same as the old way to Ill Health Retirement, but if you have Tier 1 then the only difference would be a percentage amount of the pension you would have been expected to earn until your normal retirement age, in the 1995 Section that would be 60 unless in a Special Class where it may be 55, or if you moved to the 2005 Section your retirement would be 65.

If it isn't going to cost anything then fire in a request, but then forget about it and consider it as refused, then you won't get stressed about it and will get a nice boost if accepted, but will be unfazed if refused.

My Inflammatory Arthritis is in both hands and wrists, my elbows, both knees and ankles, but I have been advised that i could do a desk job with reasonable adjustments, I think your biggest hurdle is that they can argue reasonable adjustments to refuse, they could give you voice activated software instead of making you type for example, but good luck in your quest.
