Tesco and a broken fork, what to do now?

I bought a garden fork from Tesco a month or two back and it broke on me the other day. I took it back today but since they've now shipped in all their Christmas stuff they don't have any forks left. So of course you would think that you would get your money back, so did I. The item still had it's barcode on it but when it scanned it came up at £2.99. It's a "Tesco's Finest" fork and I'll need to replace it with one that's decent but that'll cost me more like £20 elsewhere, it was about £11 from Tesco originally.
What looks like to have happened is that it's been discounted when they wanted to get rid of their summer stuff and so it went down to £2.99 then. Because I don't have the original receipt they say I could have just bought it at £2.99 and so they can't refund it at full price. I say over £1bn half year profit I think they can afford to refund me the £11 it cost orginally. Come one, who keeps their Tesco receipts, it was just something we picked up in the passing, if it was a DVD player then I would have kept the receipt but you expect them to honour these things.
Anyway, the duty manager said there was nothing he could do it was company policy. So I'm thinking of trying a couple of other Tesco stores to see if other managers are a bit nicer or I might wrap it up and post it to the chief exec with a letter of complaint. Anyone know if you can post things without stamps on them so that person at the other end has to pay for it?
Anyone got any bright ideas on this one? It's not so much the £11 that's annoying me, it's the fact that they can be so mean!
Cheers
Dave

I do of course (after thoroughly checking for any misprices)! I find that I quite often need to take things back (clothes that don't look right, and - like your experience - stuff that isn't good enough quality).
But you do need proof of purchase to return a faulty item. Did you pay in cash or by card, if the latter can you find it on your statement (or was it among other shopping items?).
If you do not have a way of proving the price paid, IME most shops will only offer the lowest selling price. Can't think of a single shop that would offer more, as it would be too open to abuse.
You could try phoning Tesco Customer Service in Dundee (their freephone number is on first post of the Tesco Misprices threads). Maybe they can locate a new fork and send you a replacement?PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

If you really can't find a copy of a credit card receipt/debit card entry on bank statement etc you could try a nice letter to someone higher up in tescos as this has worked for me but make it polite not rude as this gets better results. wortha try.0 -
Did you use your clubcard when you bought it? If so, quote the number on your letter and tell them to check your purchase history.

Or at least ASK them to check your purchase history.
They did reduce them all as I bought one for a couple of quid0 -
Ive been in the same situation. If you used your clubcard they can check when the purchase was made and for how much.
I was refunded my original purchase price (onto a tesco moneycard) even though the item has been reduced since then.
It can be done but its a bit labour intensive as they have to check evey day manually (but thats their problem of course)
Hope this helps.0 -
A valuable lesson learned. Always keep receipts for items you may need to return. I always do. It saves lots of pain in the long run.Marillion - A Better Way of Life.0
