I'd normally advise having a look on ASOS which seems to be the Amazon of fashion (actually Amazon has its own footware site which could be worth a look if your willing to part with a bit more) but as your mentioning back problems, I'd suggest having a look in Clarks, Ecco or M&S which seem to have mid-heel type shoes and seem to boast comfort and durability above anything else.

I have seen Ugg make some mid-heel type more smart looking platforms (if you can describe platforms as smart ;) ) they look high to me but I was assured the are 'not that high' by one wearer. They do come with the hefty price tag though, check out mandmdirect as I think they are on there in certain sizes.
Its a shame fitflops are a no go for you as they do some non sheepskin types too, though they are more casual smart then very smart.

Jones the Bootmaker are also woth a look, think they have 20% off all boots at the moment- seen some georgous Camper mid-heeled boots in there and they do look very smart. Think they were about £150 full price?

If all else fails, have a look in Kurt Geiger which seem to me to only ever sell mid or full on heels!
