X Box or Playstation 3

Can someone please unravel the mystery of console games! My son has a PS2 and now wants one of the above. He will be 12yrs old. Which one should we be looking at getting him? Initially, we thought PS3 as his old games could be played on it but after some research PS2 is not compatible with newer PS3 consoles. Now I am thinking why pay considerably more for a ps3 than xbox....

I'm a pretty die hard gamer, I find the xbox is great for the price, the console itself is cheaper. Graphically their isn't all that much difference (games are often produced at the same detail for both consoles)

Online access is about £25/yr for xbox, however their online services are better than the PS3.

Hookup both the PS2 and Xbox to a TV, job sorted :-)

I would however suggest finding out what his (trustworthy) friends have, so they can play online together / borrow games. This is the ultimate deal breaker imo.

PS3 is a better console, there are numerous internet comparison sites about the place, I read a lot of them before making my choice! Basically it is more expensive upfront but by the time you have added all the extras onto an Xbox they work out about the same i.e internet access and rechargable wireless controllers are included in the PS3 but extra on the Xbox and unless you own a battery factory you are gonna need these! PS3 is also a Blu-ray player which could be useful for you if it is kept in the living room and offers better technical performance. If your son will be content with playing basic games and not online then a low spec Xbox is cheaper though. It is a good point about what consoles his friends have if he wants to play with them too.

Haven't had it for £25 for about a year, but paid £30 for 14 months about 2 weeks ago.

Just google cheap MS live points. There are loads of sites who email you a code. All the ones I've used work fine and I've had absolutely no problems.

Thankyou for all your replies. I hadn't even thought about what his friends have but is a really good point! I imagine he is going to be playing mostly games but I dont want to buy something that he outgrows within a year.... Think I need to do some research with his friends parents and start pricing some options up!

ps3 all the way! great gaming machine, always upto date (just had an update to turn it into a 3d games machine with app tv) surf the internet, play music from cds or other home pcs,bbc iplayer on board, can be turned into a tv recorder with playtv, watch and download movies from the playstation store, as well as download games from store, bluray player with internet connection so always future proof, look at pictures from your camera and turn into slide shows, just a great machine for all round entertainment.
