We have an OS battery free torch. You have to squeeze the handle all the time   but it does in the car for an emergency. One that you wind up that then works for a while would be even better.

My Mum bought us all one of these from Thailand. My husband took one look, said "I don't think so." Took it apart, and found, cunningly concealed, a battery!
I'm not saying such things don't exist, simply that there are some out there that will have batteries in them. The battery we found was a disc, cell, its Sunday morning so I've forgotten what they're called. A larger version of the sort you buy for watches. You couldn't see the battery from outside, and there was a thing in the torch designed to slide up and down convincingly when you shook the torch.

I think that's a hoot! Not being of scientific bent, I wouldn't expect to understand the principle behind 'shaken, not stirred' power but this is really funny.

Actually, looking on ebay, I've found quite a few of these things up for sale - many of them seem to come from the Far East - and I'm wondering whether they too might be a con...

My mum had one of these squeezy ones - from Kleenezee or Betterware I think, but it was hard work keeping it going! She prefers the wind up one from Qvc.

Could I just ask again whether anyone has any experience of the mobile phone charging type?

sorry not visited this site for ages.
I sell Kinetic torches, which work like a kinetic watch, similar science.
you dont even have to shake them for long, maybe 10-20seconds, and yo have hours of bright light. i do also sell them on ebay, and have only positive reports on how great these torches are.

Are you sure that the disc was not the capacitor that is used to store the charge that has been generated by shaking the torch??

I have two. One is a smallish, two-strength torch, the other is larger, and has a radio, a mobile phone charger and emergency siren on it. In case of blackout they will be most useful.

Also, a windup torch is always OS because all you need to run it is a wee bit of elbow grease. :)
