Looking for new job after time off sick

Hi all
I wonder if anyone has any advice/reassurance for me? I have been desperately unhappy in my job for quite a long time and, though I've tried to push through it, in recent months it's escalated into me being poorly with stress and depression. I've had two long-ish periods off sick (4 weeks and 3 weeks) as well as a couple of days here and there with just regular sickness (flu etc) in the last year.
I really want to find a new job and make a fresh start but I'm worried that my current employer will include my absence levels in a reference and that will put off possible future employers. If I can't leave my job I feel like it will just be a vicious cycle - the longer I stay there, the more sickness absence I have but the more sickness absence I have, the harder it will be to find a new job.
This isn't doing me or my employer any good. Feeling v worried

Could you ask them to omit your sickness record unless requested from the referance, if you are being a burden to the company then they will be glad to let you go rather than not.The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
