NHS Veneers

I had 2 veneers on my front teeth for around 8 years .The dentist never really explained the long term commitment and i only had some slight acid corrision , before perfect teeth.
While eating a "Snicker" that had been stored in a fridge the one dropped off , and i bit it and the other cracked (serves me right)
I really want them replacing but had been put off , other expenses to consider.
Now its got to the point where i want my smile back :)
I have consulted my dentist who has given me 2 options, Private or NHS.
Private the cost is £294 per veneer . Total £588.
NHS 2 veneers =198.00
I am also going to have my teeth whitened pre-fitting Cost £240
I have been told that the Private veneers will be better but because of the price difference , how much better ?
My Dentist was uncommital and obviously the choice is mine .
Has anyone had NHS Veneers recently and were you happy with the outcome ?

It depends entirely on the material used as to what the aesthetic outcome will be. Also paying privately will allow you more characterisation. The NHS items tend to be of a cheaper standard of material. It will work but you may not get them to look as you would wish. Definately get the whitening done first ... be aware that it will not change the colour of any existing retorations you may have that may be currently tooth coloured.

If it's both front teeth you're having done, then you can get away with a bit lower level of toning and shading, as they will match each other, and the important thing with aesthetics is for a tooth to look like it's partner.

It really depends on what your other teeth look like.

If they have a lot of different shades and colours and patches and marks in them, then to single coloured 'flat' veneers would look out of place. If your teeth are pretty much all the same colour through and through, then the simpler veneers would probably look OK.

I would ask for a bit more guidance from your own dentist who can see them. Ask him just what would be different about the private ones, and what level of matching would be required for a good result for you.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I had an NHS veneer, then a private one, and now a private crown. The NHS veneer was "ok", I am quite demanding (being a dentist and all) and it wasn't until I realised how much better private work looked that I asked for it to be replaced. The private one looked a bit better but I was still self conscious. The crown is ace but they are very expensive.

As toothsmith said, getting two veneers to look good is easier than getting one to match as everything looks better if it is symmetrical.

You need to quiz your dentist more, the answer depends on lots of things that we can't assess from behind the computer.

    Good luck
  • Thank you for all your prompt replies, have found them very helpful.
I have arranged an appointment for whitening where i can also discuss any further guidance from my Dentist.
I know the whitening delays getting my smile back but it should be lots better for it :T
