Teachers can but it is a different union from support staff.
No idea if support staff can or not. Ask HMRC.0 -
Here is the list of recognised orgs where tax relief is due:

If I was George Osbourne I'd be ensuring one of my junior staff was working through these organisations one by one to establish a clearer line between "trade union" and "professional body".
There may be a few £million to find there and help bridge the deficit.0 -
I can assure you that these organisations are closely vetted before they even get on this list!0

Did you find out if this was support staff? I am very keen to know as I am a Finance Officer in a school and our Teaching staff seem to be doing very well.0

Nope, know where could clearly tell me if we could or couldnt.0

if it is not on the list at that link then you cannot claim for it, the list is the definitive list, there is no other source
eg: guessing that your union is probably Unison then sadly although it is listed it is only allowable for Health sector workers not school staff or anyone in other sectors (eg other "council" workers)
NUT is, on the other hand, a professional body in this context, hence the teacher / support staff difference0 -
I would be interested to know how HMRC dreams up the difference between a union and a "professional body".
If you read the memoires of the late Barbara Castle you soon find out which group of medical staff has the powerful "union"; with salaries to match.
It goes a long way to explain why the NHS pays the salaries it does and why it is so difficult to manage efficiently.0
