    ps, i am worried that they will contact my current employer for reference before I acutally give my notice in, but dont want to hand my notice in until I get the offer in writing just incase it falls through. Hope that makes sense!
    You are of course in a chicken and egg situation.

    The job offer is currently subject to references.

    It won't become unconditional until after they've had a reference from your current employer.

    So you can't give notice before they've asked for a reference.

    For that reason I've usually made whoever will be asked for the reference aware that they may be approached. It hasn't been a problem for me, but I can see it might be in some cases.
