The job offer is currently subject to references.
It won't become unconditional until after they've had a reference from your current employer.
So you can't give notice before they've asked for a reference.
For that reason I've usually made whoever will be asked for the reference aware that they may be approached. It hasn't been a problem for me, but I can see it might be in some cases.Signature removed for peace of mind1
